I’m concerned about something I found in WinPatrol’s Startup folder. There are six programs listed but the one that concerns me is one simply named WebCheck. There is no command or Company info. listed. Researching WebCheck I found that WebCheck. dll is a file that contains COM interfaces for
Website monitoring. But the one found in startup does not contain the word .dll.

A search of the computer found that I have 8 files for the .dll file. One of the files found was in C:WindowsSystem32 In Properties the File Description was: Web Site Monitor.

My concern is Should it be allowed to remain in the Startup folder?

Looks like you could have picked up a virus.
See http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ and search for webcheck.

I viisited Bleeping Computer and none of the dll or exe files were found when I did a search. I’m still in the dark about the WebCheck item in Startup. By the way, no exe files were listed for WebCheck and no Author. Some of the files found were dlls, some were Application extensions, a couple were MUI files.

      Gloria,
Hello… I would run some scans from Malwarebytes and EmsisoftEmergencyKit.. (both Free) :cheers:As this could be a virus but is also used by your OS. See this WebCheck.dll…Regards Fred

      1. Malwarebytes Free

      2. Emeregency Kit

I have a webcheck.dll on my system but not in my startup folder. That would concern me as well. AV/AM scanning would be a good idea to rule out nasties.

I’ve run my anti-virus and anti-malware programs and both said I was clean.

      Fred,

Thanks for the link to EmsiSoft. I’ve added the Emergency Kit to my USB Key Utilities Project.

Have you installed any Samsung S/W recently? Upon further investigation this appears to be linked to MarkAny app that is installed by Samsung. It installs a MaAgent.exe in the Startup folder. A Google search shows removal methods, although nothing is straight forward.

No Ted, I’ve not installed anything by Samsung.

You must have used the wrong search box. This is what I found.

I saw those too, but mine does not have the exe extension and that is what I’m looking for.

Did you ask WinPatrol if they have any information?

Did you ask WinPatrol if they have any information?

Yes, I did. The said they had no information re: Web Check.

I’m a bit confused about exactly what you found in your Startup folder. You first seemed to say that it wasn’t a dll:

I’m concerned about something I found in WinPatrol’s Startup folder. There are six programs listed but the one that concerns me is one simply named WebCheck…the one found in startup does not contain the word .dll.

Then you seemed to say that it wasn’t an .exe:

I saw those too, but mine does not have the exe extension and that is what I’m looking for.

Since it matters what the extension is, can you clarify this, please?

      Ted,

Thanks for the post. I searched my C: drive since I have the Kies software for my Samsumg Galaxy S II phone installed and sure enough the file you mentioned and the one the OP mentioned are both on my machine {note file types of .dll & .dll.mui NO .exe!}. However, neither MSE or Malwarebytes has complained about these files.

Yes RG, that is where mine was from as well. I uninstalled Kies and all that stuff is gone. I never used Kies anyway so I do not miss it. Same phone by the way. I read recently that we can expect ICS shortly. Of course with Samsung “shortly” could be anywhere from 1 to 6 months!

      Ted,

I installed Kies so I could sync my Outlook with the phone. I won’t buy a phone that won’t sync well with Outlook as I depend on it in my RV travels to always have all my contacts, calendar, and especially Notes {Health Ins, Vehicle Ins, RV Information, etc.} always handy. I really like the Kies Air for just moving pictures and other files back an forth though.
