When I want to select multiple messages (by holding down CTRL-SHIFT and selecting by left-click), only the first message gets selected (highlighted) normally and when cliking on any next message instead of being highlighted the message actually gets opened.

Are you pressing both Ctrl + Shift then clicking? If so, you only use one or the other, depending on how you want to select. If not, I refer you to my sig!

With default mouse behavior, you should select multiple noncontiguous messages with Crtl-Leftclick, not Ctrl-Shift-Leftclick.

OK, you’re right. Still it should not open a message but just highlight it when selected. I tested it on the other computer where it works fine

You are right, it shouldn’t. Perhaps the two computers have different Outlook settings under Tools | Options | Other | Reading Pane, or different mouse “hover” settings under Control Panel?
