• Office 2010 battles Office 2007 – be warned

When I installed 2010 professional, I chose to leave 2007 installed “just in case”. What a mess!

Both 2010 and 2007 seem to believe that they must be installed to run. Installing either uninstalls the other. Not remove, just sort of disable.

Each time you run application from one, it flips the install/unistall state. Worst yet, windows update installs the one it updates. So the latest 2007 updates switched my system back to 2007.

The “installed” version grabs the file associations, by the way.

    I’ve now removed 2007.

    So be warned.

    Microsoft never ceases to amaze!

From what I’ve read, Office 2010 is a large update on the 2007 app. it allows much more custimization of the app, especially the ribbon. Just like having 2 seperate AV programs running in real time, having 2 different versions of Office running in real time evidently causes lots of problems. Each attempt to grab focus from the other and problems ensue. This is not an MS thing. Witness the problems with aforementioned AV products. I have to believe having 2 different versions of any manufacturers app on the same PC at the same time will cause like problems to occur.

With earlier versions of Office, as long as you installed in the order of oldest to newest, they could coexist reasonably well. (Except Outlook; you only want one version of Outlook.) Unlike AV software, Office applications do not contend in real time for low-level access to the file system, the TCP/IP stack, or other resources.

That’s why I said that evidently this was the case. Since I personally have not installed 2007 and 2010 I have no personal knowledge. 2007 seems to be working reasonably well for me so at present I have no desire to spend the bucks for 2010. The point I was trying to make is this is not just a MS thing, there are other examples of various versions of apps or different manufacturer apps that do not play well together. This seems to be a fact of life with the ever increasing complexities of today’s software.

You can prevent that by adding the following to the registry:

      Office 2007:
      reg add HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0WordOptions /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

This example is just for Word and just office 2007 but you can do this with any version back to at least 2000 and forward to 2010
