I am installing Office 97 onto computer with Windows 98. Are there any updates that I should avoid?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMarch 31, 2003 at 6:21 pm #665314No, I don’t think so. Get Office 97 SR-2 if it’s still available.
I don’t know if you use Outlook. Outlook 97 is one of the weaker parts of the Office 97 suite; Outlook 98 is better, but unfortunately, it’s not available for download any more (see OL98: Outlook 98 No Longer Available For Download.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 31, 2003 at 6:44 pm #665328Thanks for the fast response. I use Outlook Express for mail. I did not load Outlook onto my machine.
I have a copy of SR-2. I tried to load it this morning but my computer got lost in never never land for 10 minutes on the reboot. I used GoBack to revert to earlier time. I will try to reinstall it again.

AskWoody LoungerApril 1, 2003 at 2:14 pm #665519I went to Microsoft Office Download Center and printed off lists of all the available updates for Office, Word, and Excel. I tried to sort through the descriptions and pick all downloads that I might need. I have downloaded them to a folder on my hard drive for future use. The only one that I have loaded so far is “SR2b”. I think I will take some time before I install any of the others.

AskWoody LoungerApril 2, 2003 at 2:26 am #665669Unless your Office97 CD includes SR-1, I think you must install SR-1 before trying to install SR-2 or SR-2b. Unlike Service Packs (SP) for the OSs, these SRs for Office97 are not cumulative, ie SR-2/2b does not include SR-1. Suggest you download the version checker from the MS Office site and run that. It is only a small file. If you are in the UK, contact me off-line and I can lend you a magazine cover CD with the SRs on them and/or email you the version checker if it is not available elsewhere. Good luck.
PS To anybody: How come a spellcheck says that CD, SP, OS, MS and UK (!) are not in the Lounge dictionary? What am I doing wrong?
PPS and spellcheck as well! -

AskWoody LoungerApril 3, 2003 at 3:14 am #665937Thanks for the offer Tony. But I live in the U.S.
I ran the version checker and it said no action was needed. But I don’t know if it is correct. Everything I could find at Microsoft said that SR-1 had to be installed prior to SR-2b.I don’t know if I need to uninstall Office and start over or if I should just leave it alone.
I downloaded the lists of what each release contained but I don’t have time to read it right now. I plan on leaving it alone unless I run into problems or I find something on the SR-1 list that I can’t live without.
