I was called to a clients office earlier this week because all the excel spreadsheets that they use began taking inordinately long times to load off the file server. These are xp systems running office 2003. The culprit turned out to be office file validation update. A large test file that I used could be opened in seconds on systems without office file validation installed while systems that had the update installed were taking over 3 minutes to load the file. I verified this by installing the update on a system, opening the file and then removing the update and opening the file. After removing this update from all the computers in the office everything worked good and all the users were happy. I also blocked in from coming down again by hiding the update. The only good thing about this update is that it got me some good billable hours. My recomendation is to not install it.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |
