I have a new computer running Windows XP. I backed up all my old data using MS Backup with the .qic extension. How do I get my new computer to read/open these floppies?

You don’t. The different versions from one OS to the next can NOT be read by another. What was the old OS that you made the backup in?

Thanks Dave. I was using Windows 98 SE. Would that make a difference?

According to the folks at the QIC organization, the Win98 Backup/Restore program will “read” the .QIC files but I don’t know how you do that in XP. I looked in the Restore module of XP’s backup system and don’t see anything about .QIC

Thanks bigaldoc. After talking to the guys at the computer shop yesterday, I reckon I’m going to take both boxes in to them and get them to transfer my old data over. Doesn’t really seem to be any other way!

If you’re going to take the computers in to the shop anyway, why don’t you get them to put the hard drive from your old computer in to the NEW computer as a SECOND hard drive? That way you’ll gain a little “extra” storage space for the future. Just a thought, in case THEY don’t suggest it to you.

Hope this isn’t too late. There is another way. I found this in an MS newsgroup:

“Cannot Restore Backups That You Create in Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows
Me with the Windows XP Ntbackup Tool

To resolve this behavior, restore the data from the tape or file by using
Msbackup on a computer that is running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows
              Me.

              Suggested workaround:

Obtain the W9x MSBACKUP program and run it in compatibility mode on the
WinXP computer. If you do not have the program you can download a copy from
              Microsoft: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/msback.exe (558K)

The MSBACK.EXE file is a self-extracting file containing the MSBACKUP.EXE
              program and supporting files.

Place this file on a floppy disk, open a DOS window, and execute the file.
The MSBACKUP.EXE program and supporting files will be extracted to the same
              floppy.

You must then run the install program. Create a temporary directory on the
hard drive and then command A>INSTALL C:TEMP (or whatever directory name
you made on the hard drive). MSBACKUP will then run and attempt to set
              itself up.

It is during this process that some users tend to find WinXP not allowing
              the program to proceed.

              All the Best,
              Kelly
