I started trying to solve this problem with a post [h=3]”Program worked for years – now failed[/h]in the General Productivity forum – it got moved to the General Windows and I’ve narrowed it down to a Windows 10 problem and am re-writing it here.

It’s a Fugawi map reading program for the UK Ordnance Survey maps. I’ve had it for 12 years and it has worked happily through XP, W7 , and now W10 for 4 months until last week, when it would not load its data storage file and would not re-create it – when the program was closed, a window reported “Invalid File” and required to be clicked twice to remove.

A friend suggested that I try running it as Administrator – ie right clicking on the desktop icon. This produced a Windows pop up saying it was from an Unknown Producer, did I want to continue. Yes – and the program runs perfectly, producing a data store and re-loading it. But if I then try to run the program normally from the desktop, I get a Windows message:-
“/red cross/ Exception ERegistryException (that’s not a typo!) in module Fugawi.exe at 0037376. Failed to set data for extension”.

Clearly I could continue just to run it through the administrator but that’s a bit tedious, and also doesn’t satisfy the enquiring mind as to why and can it be solved.

Windows 10 is at version 1511 – that is AU has not appeared yet for me.

    Thanks for any help
    Rob

Right click on the program Icon and then click on the properties item. Then click on the compatibility tab on the top. Then check the box that says run this program as the administrator. Then click the apply button. Then it should run from the icon without doing anything extra. There are lots of programs out there that have to be run this way.

It’s one of the badly behaved programs that uses non-standard storage locations methinks.
Use Sysinternals Process Monitor to find out what file / registry value is not allowed in non-admin mode and change permissions to allow that action. Capture the data just before you fire up the map program and then stop the capture immediately you get the program error, then look through the data for file/registry actions that have failed / been denied.

      cheers, Paul

Many thanks, guys. Your help is much appreciated. Something to play with this evening.

I can cope with a number of basic things in Windows, but this is a new area to me; it’s not an everyday thing but somewhere, sometime, I’ll collect some brownie points for knowing this!!
      Thanks again – Rob
