• Older software won’t run in 1809

I have had a few experiences where older “legacy” software worked in Windows 10-1709, but it won’t work in Windows 10-1809 (in all cases, Windows was 64-bit):
    * Webroot
    * LaserLink 2018 (Tax prep software
    * Fed Comp (proprietary credit union software)

The version of Webroot was really old; a newer version is available.  We haven’t finished working this one yet.

In the case of LaserLink and Fed Comp, I uninstalled the software, then reinstalled it (and running it) using Compatibility Mode (Windows 7 rules).

Using Compatibility Mode fixed the problems with LaserLink; insufficient testing has been done on FedComp.

Moral of this story: If you have older software, and it won’t run in Windows 10, install it and run it in Compatibility Mode (allows you to use the rules of a previous version of Windows).  This will probably fix the problem, and it is a very easy fix.

be much more specific about Webroot, Jim
because there are several different kinds of softwares from Webroot

are you talking about Webroot Antivirus, Webroot Internet Security Plus, Webroot Internet Security Complete?

      come on, do better

Be honest with you, I don’t know!

My supervisor said that it is an old version of Webroot. And it is centrally managed from a console. That’s all I know.

The user told me that Fed Comp and Laser Link have been working without any problem. So apparently Compatibility mode (W7 rules) is doing the trick.

Our organization also had software problems with a couple of programs when I pushed 1803. One was a large server based tax program and Cherwell may have been the other but not sure. This is why I haven’t pushed 1809 and we stay on 1803 for a while.

Me and a couple of my coworkers are running 1809 now and we are installing 1809 on new systems. We’ll see how that goes for a while.

I just discovered something about FedComp running with Windows 7 rules (“Compatibility Mode”):

We just saw a message from FedComp when a user logged in – Fed Comp will no longer be supported running in Windows 7 after November of 2019 – two months before Microsoft quits supporting it. So I think I will install Fed Comp with Windows 8.1 rules from now on – this should give us an additional three years.

I could go with Windows 10-1803, but that goes out of support two months before Windows 7 goes out of support. 1809 doesn’t work with Fed Comp, and all other versions of Windows 10 have either gone out of support or are about to.
