I am creating a fill in form template in Microsoft Word 2003. Once a field has been filled in w/ the maximum length of characters how do I automate it to move to the next field without the user having to depress the tab key or click on the next field? I have no idea what to put nor where to put it.

Also, how can I keep the form from opening up in preview mode?

In Design mode? Maybe if you exit Design mode on the Control Toolbox toolbar before saving.

I don’t think the old form controls can monitor keystrokes. Maybe one of the ActiveX controls in the Control Toolbox can do that?

Design mode? Control Toolbox toolbar? Are these features in 2003 or 2007?

The Control Toolbox toolbar is available in Word 2003 (and before); it is not visible by default but you can display it using View | Toolbars | Control Toolbox. In Word 2007 it has been replaced by a part the Developer ribbon.
The first button on the Control Toolbox toggles design mode on/off.

I was guessing at what you meant by Preview mode. If it isn’t Design mode, can you explain it in more detail?
