    I should have known better!

It is one of those days when I was waiting for a program complete an analysis and started fiddling around with my desktop.

Ran O&O Shut Up and flipped a number of switches.

Then my better judgement kicked in and I decided to restore the computer to the state it was in prior to running the app.

No dice. Went to system recovery thinking I would simply click on a restore point and be back to before running  the app.

When I opened System Restore I got the message, “System protection is turned off.”

Can anyone provide a step by step guide on how to turn system restore back on?

      Check Group policy (GPedit.msc)
Computer configuration > Administrative Templates > System > System Restore make sure it’s enabled
Then check services and switch SR to enabled and automatic start

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Win10 has a habit of disabling system restore. Right-click this pc > properties > system protection and you can re-enable it.

Yes, it’s a very nasty habit.  Seen it many times.  No idea how, or why, it gets turned off.  The take-home is that before you do anything that might need to be quickly rolled back, make sure its on.  Even then, Sys Restore is not always going to work.  Routine image incremental backups are always a safety net.

My experience has been that System Restore is often turned of by default with  new CU installed, and certainly between upgrades to a new version.

Well then… one more thing to add to my monthly system maintenance checklist – make sure it’s on after a CU.  Is it a bug, or a feature?

      Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in recovering the PC from a restore point so I took the quick way out and recovered the machine using Acronis.

Fortunately, our machines are backed-up twice a day and I was able to save the files I was working on since the last backup to a USB drive prior to recovering the system.

I know better to fuss around with our computers and O&O ShutUp has reconfirmed the notion that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

      Hi Kathy,
I use Acronis also. Acronis doesn’t back up restore points, and when you do an image restore you’ll notice in system restore protection settings C: System will be off and probably notice another C: saying missing or something similar. Click configure and turn off the missing C and then you can set the correct C: System settings for system restore.

BTW I use O&O and have not had any issues with it. Much faster than bouncing through every menu to get all my settings in order.
