I have just started to use WORD in Office Professional 2010 on my home computer, and Office is activated. When I try to use the Open command, or Browse to add a Trusted Location, or Modify a File Location, nothing happens when I press the buttons. I can only open a document using Recent Documents or by finding the document in My Documents and clicking it. Any ideas about what is happening and how I can fix it?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 19, 2013 at 9:23 am #1375698First step might be to rename your normal.dotm file. You didn’t mention which operating system you have, but in Windows 7, you browse to C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates. Word must be closed in order for you to rename the Normal template. I usually just add “.old” on the end of the file name so it is “normal.dotm.old”. Start Word and see if you options now work.
If renaming the Normal doesn’t help, you could try running Word in safe mode. If you don’t have the same issue in safe mode, then you can test to see if you have add-ins that may be causing the issue. To start Word in safe mode, you can type in the search field under the Start button in Windows 7: winword.exe /a

AskWoody PlusFebruary 19, 2013 at 1:49 pm #1375752Thanks for trying to help. I am running W8 32. After not receiving any replies from the Lounge for a few days, I figured that I had an unusual problem. I realized that my Office 2010 installation was still under warranty, so I contacted Microsoft. They tried all the ideas you suggested and many others. None of them worked. I downloaded OpenOffice to see if it had the same problem, and it did. Microsoft and I then knew that the problem was probably not with the Office 2010 programs. Microsoft tried to repair W8, but Repair would not work. Eventually, they decided that since I had done my W8 upgrade over a W7 upgrade of XP that the problem probably lay in the leftovers of the other upgrades. I did a clean install of W8, and all is well now. :clapping:
