• Open dBase IV files in Excel 2000

I recently upgraded to Office 2000 and have a question regarding opening dBase IV files in Excel 2000. In the previous version of Office I could double click on a .dbf (dBase IV) file and it would open in Excel 97. Since upgrading I no longer am able to do that.

I have tried going to the Folder-Options-File Types seeing if .dbf can be tied to Excel. I can’t find any dBase files listed. So was unable to select that option.

Am I missing a add-in to office or not correctly set up Office? Anyone have any ideas?

Assuming that you have the dbf import filter installed, if you double click on the dBase file that you want to open, Windows will open a dialog box that is titled Open With. At the top is a box to use to fill in a description of the file. Fill in “dBase file”. Select Excel. At the bottom of the dialog box is a check box to “Always use this program to open this file”, check this. Click OK. From now on Windows will use Excel to open dbf files.

If you do not have the dBase file filter installed, you can use Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel to install it. Choose Office 2000, then add/remove to install additional filters.

      Hope this helps.
