Does anyone know of a “Utility”, preferably free , that will add the ability to Open With a file of a type other than the types associated with the current program?

Eg: I’m in Excel (or Photo Paint, or etc.) …I go to File, Open (all file types selected)….select “SomeText.doc”….Word loads and opens the file.
Or, when I select the file, I am offered a choice of installed programs capable of opening the file.

I believe there is such a program for Mac OS, but I’ve not been able to find one for PC’s.

    Have a Great day!!!

How about holding the Shift and right clicking on the file. There will be an Open With… choice in the menu.

I think there may also be a registry setting that will always show the Open With menu choice.

Maybe X-Setup or TweakUI will show allow you to set the registry setting.

Just, right click on the file and choose:Open With/Select Program.
You can select the program you wish to open the file with,
and you can check the box”Always open this file type with this aplication”

        Hello Bryan and Liberator

The “right button” will provide Open With in Windows Explorer……Not so in other programs such as Word, Excel, Photo Paint, etc…..at least not on the NT4 and ME systems I’m usually on.

I haven’t tried TweakUI or Xteq yet…..It’ll probably be the weekend before I do.

        Thanks for your suggestions.
        Have a Great day!!!

Ken, testing briefly in both Word and Excel in Office 2000 installed in Windows 2000, when I’m in the File Open menu Window, if I right-click a file, the fifth item in the pop-up is Open With (in my installation the first four from the top are Open, Open Read-Only, Open as A Copy, Print, Make Available Offline), and that has a side drop down of selections which includes “Choose Program”. If I select “Choose Program” it pops the same dialog as you get from Explorer after doubleclicking an unregistered file type.

Does this help … or have I annoyed you even more? grin

Ken, FWIW I confirmed that the dialog I found exists in Office XP under Windows XP and does NOT exist on Office 97 apps under Windows95.

            Hi John and jscher

John…..Hey, I’m not at all annoyed….gratefull, yes, for all the help I get on the Lounge.

Here is a pic of what I see if I right click a file in the “File, Open” menu window.

jscher….I’ll give OpenExpert a try….it looks like it should work.

            Have a Great day!!!

Ken I expect this capability is a function of your OS. Upgrading your OS or JScher’s OpenExpert appear to be the alternatives.
I don’t have screen capture capability, and pressing Alt to do an Alt-PrintScreen drops me out of the dialogs, otherwise I would post a picture of the dialog in W2000. Good luck.

              Hi John

I’m using WindowsMe and NT4 with the same results on both.
Thanks for your efforts to help thankyou

              Ken,

Are you holding down the Shift Key when you right click?

Try that and see if it does what you need.

A Google Search for “open with” shell extension turned up the following. I have no idea if it works from the File|Open dialog, but you could try it out:

          OpenExpert from BAxBEx Software

I was not aware of an “Open With” in Word.
How does one activate that feature?

Do you mean the “Open With” that you get aftert doing File | Open and then right clicking?
          ———–
I was aware of the Open With you get in File | Open in Word. The options are the same as those you get in Windoze Explorer.

          • #620561

In Windows 2000 with Office 2000, and in Windows XP with Office XP, yes, at least that is what I meant.

OK everybody…….I’ve got to be blind…. in one eye at least….. on my ME PC, I’ve just tried the “Right Click” (no Shift) on the file name in the File, Open windows in Word, Excel and Photo Paint, the programs I’ve been using in my examples, and Open With IS there! stupidme

I’ll check my NT PC again on Monday…..If it’s not there, I’ll try “Open Expert”

Thanks again for everybodies’ patience and suggestions. thankyou

              Have a Great day!!!

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 27-Sep-02 20:44. John has pointed out to me that you can do the same thing in Office programs with Win 2000 & Win XP. I don’t have those OSes, but now I know.[smile])

            Hi Howard:
Not in Word. In Windows Explorer (or a folder window), select the file, press & hold the Shift key, & right click. The Open With… command should show up on the menu.
            Cheers,
