opening excel documents (97 no SR)

HI all

When opening a Word document an Excel document also opens. Where would the code for that opening be so that I can delete it?

I would press Alt+F8 and look for an AutoOpen macro that runs when you open a document. There are always other possibilites, such as an add-in that runs when you open a document, or even a virus, but I’d start with looking at macros.

I checked the macros and there are none that would auto open a document.

Where else can I check?

Is this happening with all Word documents, or just one document in particular? If it happens with all, look in the Word & Office startup folders to see if there are any templates or add-ins that load with Word. If so, remove them & add them in one at a time. In between, restart & close Word to try to isolate each add-in. Is this something that just started happening? If so, then perhaps you recall adding some new software or utility recently.

Is it actually opening Excel or could it simply be an Includetext field that has a link to an Excel spreadsheet?

I suppose that you should also run a virus scan with an up to date program (always a good idea when you have some strange behavior).

I ran a virus scan, complete with macro virus check. My PC is clean.

It is not happening with all word documents, just one in particular. If I save that one as something else then the something else is also doing it.

It is actually opening Excel. As word opens there is text at the bottom left of the screen that scrolls by quite quickly. One of the things is a call to the Excel file that is opening.

Can you post the document to the Lounge (there’s a 100kb limit)? If the document is too big, is there a way to make a copy & remove most of the text &/or graphics, but still leave enough to cause the problem?

If you press Alt+F9 & look for fields, are there any fields that are linked to a spreadsheet?

What happens if you start Word by going to the command line, Start/Run… & type:

winword.exe /a

Then open the document. Do you still open the Excel spreadsheet?

And I just reread a previous post. I’m not sure what you mean by text scrolling by in the bottom left of the screen. Do you have some field there? Are you talking about the status bar?

If I start word then it does not open Excel. It is only when I access that one file. Yes I am referring to the status bar.

This is a Mail Merge document that takes it’s data from an Excel Spreadsheet.

That’s why Excel open when you open this document.

Actually, When I tried to open it, it told me that it was a mail merge doc and that it couldn’t find the data source. That’s how I could tell.

To turn it off, open up the document.

Goto Tools|Mail Merge…

That will pop up a dialog box.

Under #1 Main Document

Click the button on the left that says Create. The last option (in W2K anyway I don’t have access to W97 here) should say: Restore to Normal Word Document. Select that.

Now you have a normal Word doc again.
