Opening Photos from Explorer to view – error message “not implemented”

Several days after I accepted the recent Microsoft updates for Windows 10 Pro at the end of October 2024, I am now getting “not implemented” when opening a photo (bmp) from Explorer to view the photo. A quick search on the internet offered a lackluster solution from Microsoft (scan the hard drive with sfc/scannow, and if no error found do a clean install of Windows). That is not acceptable to me.

I found the only way around it was to copy the photo file to my desktop and open it from there to view the photo. If I e-start my PC instead, no problem for about an hour, but after an hour or so the error returns again.

Is anyone else having this problem? Any possible solution… or do we wait for Microsoft to issue a patch.

This appears to a bad update to the Photos app as many other users are reporting this as in the link below. It appears that it is isolated to the Photos app and the photos open correctly with any other photo app. May need to wait till MS issues a fix in a future update.

As Alex5723 hinted, the fix is to change the file association to a different app as the latest update seems to have broken Windows Photos app ability to open files from Explorer. (I reset mine to Paint.net since it opens relatively quickly compared to Photoshop.)

Check default app settings for .bmp.

* Windows 10 22H2. I don’t have Microsoft Photos app.

same thing I am trying to open copy pics to square all kinds of issues!
