I say if Oracle cannot support XP, then, it’s time it releases JAVA to the Open Source community. Of course it won’t; sad. 🙂

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

I say if Oracle cannot support XP, then, it’s time it releases JAVA to the Open Source community. Of course it won’t; sad. 🙂

I was expecting some programs to no longer be supported on WinXP since Microsoft dropped all support of WinXP and Office 2003 back on April 8th. If programmers can’t rely upon backup support from publishers of an Operating System they obviously will no longer work on those programs. Some of the antivirus programs will continue for another 2 years but not all.
They just posted an addendum at the story I linked above. Oracle clarified their statements in that future updates may or may not work in XP (i.e., customer beware). They probably will still work, but Oracle won’t guarantee so; that’s the gist of the story now. I’m sure folk will install and give either thumbs up or down on the future updates and folk w/ XP can decide when it’s no longer feasible to update Java for that platform. 🙂
I’m not really sure what the purpose of v8 is unless it’s more for Developers as the Download at http://www.java.com gives the recommended as v7 of which u60 I believe is being updated to u65 later this month.
I think the usage of Java in general seems to be diminishing as I have it disabled in browsers and have never been prompted for it for the odd program that I’ve downloaded/used except for http://www.pingtest.net and I no longer bother with that.
