RE Outlook 2010 and then Outlook 2013 connect problems.

I have had the same POP3 email for more than twenty years. Perhaps like many others I may have been caught a little flat-footed when Microsoft apparently shut off service (last fall) to the Outlook 2010 I had been using, albeit rarely using. I am now locked out of my emails since 11/29/2021.

Ok I know 2010 was out of service support -wise but this computer was primarily off-line to do spreadsheet work and the occasional email. I didn’t think there were too many threats with my longtime fly fishing friends. Seems that they updated Microsoft exchange security parameters or something like that. So as of December 1 I haven’t been able to connect with my longtime ISP.

So time to upgrade. I had unused licensed Office 2013 to install in order to recover and buy some time. I made sure to use Control Panel to FIX/REPAIR 2013 to the latest version (Now on VER 15.0.5441.1000).  Easy fix I thought. I went ahead and archived my PST file and went ahead and configured 2013 to the exact same ISP settings I have used for 20 years while migrating from various computers and Windows versions. Imported the PST file. Then got the same Error Code you all are familiar with: “Send receive error, Outlook (2013) cannot connect with your INCOMING/OUTGOING email server (codes 0x8004209 etc.).

I see others have had similar error instance, most years ago. Much ado about the having correct Port setting (a double check with my ISP who said I do) and the like – so I began the journey:

Erased and re-entered POP settings. Multiple times with different settings.

Created a brand new PST file i.e. started from scratch.

Made sure Firewall settings allowed Office 2013 (it did).

Turned Firewall on and off. (No difference)

Did the above over and over again in every which combination to be sure I didn’t miss something.

Gasp. Something definitely wrong here. Gave up on Microsoft. Tried Thunderbird with both Auto –connect and manual entry modes – with both POP3 and IMAP. Nope, no connect. Same error message. Funny thing – tried Wife’ email- same ISP different Email address my installed on Thunderbird. Wonderful worked on Auto connect!  Nice but didn’t help me. I now had hers but not mine connected.

Okay, let’s try Windows 10 Email / Calendar.  See above won’t connect same error.

So it’s April and no progress. Not sure where to go from here.  Long journey – nowhere to go.

ONE THING I NOTICED:    Office 2013 installed right on top of Office 2010. Didn’t uninstall anything from 2010. Excel 2010 remained fully functional and I am almost very glad too!  Office 2013 is slow, mushy and not nearly as snappy as 2010 and I would hate to leave 2010 for an inferior product. I would still use 2010 for what I do offline if I could get ANY mail client to work – and I would also migrate to Office 2013 and Outlook 2013 for the time being if that’s what it takes. So far my efforts have been on the (Outlook) user input side, not yet looking under that Windows hood so to speak to see what hidden setting or configuration file may have to be modified.

Further, not entirely sure how to uninstall Office 2010 without causing further problems. Again, I will gladly do that if I was sure that would resolve the problem. Again, something tells me that I need to wipe out any trace of Office 2010. I would hate to do that without a second opinion form this this group whom appears to be very insightful. Right now it’s a loose-loose for me and I would appreciate some help on something I may have overlooked. What would you folks do?

Thank-you all in advance; this is a wonderful group.

Can you get to your email via your browser? This is the best way to test all is well.

If you can connect, check the settings for external clients is the same as your wife’s settings.

Let us know what you find.

      cheers, Paul

Who is providing the email?  Godaddy has been making changes to their email and as a result you may have to set it up again to get it to “grab” new authentication setup.

Thank you all for the informative replies.

I spent the morning with my ISP trying to resolve these problems. They were able to verify that my email address and server is up to date security wise and we were able to check my server and port settings accurately. What I was using previously was accurate according to them (see below). They were able to guide me connecting through their portal and sign into my email using my browser. It is still active and I was able to at least see my later emails after December 1st 2021. Unfortunately we were unable to resolve my outlook connection problems using Outlook 2013.

Said I must have an “Outlook” problem and offered no solutions. Again they (the ISP representative) said all my settings were correct and Outlook should have worked with these settings.

      As follows:

Incoming: POP3.mail.wideopenwest.com   PORT 110; Requires encrypted SSL (Unchecked)

Outgoing: smtp.mail.wideopenwest.com   PORT 587   Outgoing encryption (NONE)

Advanced: Outgoing server (SMPT) requires authentication (CHECKED) and ” x – use same settings as my incoming mail server”

Note wife’s settings are IDENTICAL; same ISP different address. She never had any ogher Office installs other than 2013.

All paths seem to lead to an uninstall all Office installations (see 2010 note previously). ?

I can think of anything else to try. Somewhat frustrating.

      Thank you in advance.

As it works for your wife but not you using the same settings, then something is amiss with your account.
Can you log onto webmail and check the settings, particularly security?

It seems the correct server for Wide Open West is pop3.mail.wowway.com
I have tested both servers and only wowway works for me.
Try wowway and see if it works for you.

      cheers, Paul

p.s. using non encrypted email connections is bad m’kay. You should always use SSL or OAUTH so nobody can see your password / read your mail.

      Paul,

Thank you so much for your thoughts.

I can agree something is amiss in my account.

I purchased both identical Dell computers with factory WIN 10 pre-installed. We are now both running WIN10  21h1. She received Office (Ooutlook) 2013 upon first use of computer, I went with Office 2010 at the time. I have since migrated to 2013 as stated. All updated.

We both have identical connection settings in outlook, down ot the checked selections and the only difference is she is xxx@wowway.com and I am xxx@wideopenwest.com and I still have full use of all Office 2010 functions except Outlook 2010 obviously. Other than those items virtually identical.

Are you saying I can try to log into my xxx@wideopenwest.com email account as a user while directing the Incoming/Outgoing servers to: POP3.mail.wowway.com and smtp.mail.woway.com?          (Ports 110/578 accordingly).

Much appreciation for your thoughts and time.

      Change your settings as follows:

Incoming: POP3.mail.wowway.com   PORT 110; Requires encrypted SSL (Unchecked)

Outgoing: smtp.mail.wowway.com   PORT 587   Outgoing encryption (NONE)

      Let us know…

      cheers, Paul

      SOLVED!

Your solution worked and I am happy to be back with the email living.

“Oh My goodness” – I blurted out and the emails rang in just like Shirley Temple. I  never thought to cross-channel servers like that. Bravo! You should definitely smile at taking the time to help a little guy like me. I know you folks tackle much bigger issues than this.

For my next trick, I shall become a paid subscriber. Thank you so much Paul.

And… cheers. This ones for you!

Now you need to convert to encrypted connections.

I can’t find encrypted (TLS/SSL) settings for wow. This is bad m’kay.
I suggest you ring them and ask.

      cheers, Paul
