• Outlook 365 alias issue

I am an Office 365 subscriber. I have a Microsoft account and use Outlook.com. On my PC I have set up an Outlook Exchange connection to my Outlook.com account. Problem 1 is that when I want to send an email from the PC, I want to use my alias email address, but not the primary alias in Outlook.com. Yes, I can do this by changing the new email message From: dropdown which has all of my aliases. But why can’t I default it to that alias? I have to remember to change the From: dropdown every time I make a new message. Problem 2 is the “sent on behalf of” issue. (I’m not delegating anyone to send email for me.) I don’t understand how this “feature” works or how to get rid of it. Instead of using the From: alias address I sent an email with, any reply to that email will come back me from the sender with something like “my name on behalf of my name my alias email address”. Or sometimes I get the obnoxious outlook_xxxxxxxxxx.com address that Outlook.com creates.

Just wondering if there is an article on this issue or if you have heard about these issues.

    Thanks.

I think you can only do that by creating a separate account (as aliases are “receive-only”):

Send Messages Using Additional Office 365 Exchange Addresses

How to add an alias to an Office 365 account and how to set up Outlook to send email messages as this alias

… or by subscribing to an additional 3rd-party service (!):

      ChooseFrom for Exchange Online/Office 365

Yeah, it’s specifically a feature of Outlook that the primary address of an Exchange account is the sending address and cannot be permanently changed. I think there used to be a third-party add-on that changed this behaviour, though…

Ok, thanks a lot. It’s not the worst thing…it is a free account for me after all. But I’ll skip the 3rd party software.

For a long time I used the MS account as POP and had no issues at all. But after switching to IMAP…that’s when the pain started.

      Again. Thanks.

According to Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com you can set the default “from address” in Outlook settings.

That’s all about (only about) Outlook.COM though, not the email client formerly known as Outlook!

        I.E.:

You can also change your default From address:
Go to Settings > View all Outlook settings > Sync email.
Under Set default From address, choose the address you want to use and select Save.

doesn’t exist in Outlook the client, only Outlook the webmail.

(With special thanks to Microsoft for naming Outlook.com settings as “View all Outlook settings”)

        The wrong Outlook, Gromit!
