Outlook crashes on exit

Every time I exit Outlook it causes a Dr Watson error. I have tried reinstalling, and that has had no affect. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you are running any antivirus, try temporarily disabling it to see if that helps.

If not, it may be time to re-install windows

Thanks. I tried that but it still insists on crashing with an access violation on exit. I should also mention I’m running Win NT 4.0 SP 6.0a, and I’m using Outlook 2000 SR-1.

My guess is that you have mis-matched dll’s (or a corrupted dll). It’s no fault of your own – just real poor design of the O/S. Microsoft routinely distributes different DLL’s without updating their version information properly. There’s no excuse for that practice, in my opinion.

That sounds about right. I appreciate the feedback. I don’t suppose there’s much I can do (other than leave it running) to fix this. Thanks also for the quick response.

Rename mapi32.dll and run Detect and Repair.

Although this is by far the best suggestion I have heard to solve this, my first attempt has not succeeded. For some odd reason, Outlook popped up a dialog box that said something like (another program has does something bad, do you want Outlook to fix it). I said Yes (like a fool) and it went back to crashing on exit. I see that there are two versions on mapi32.dll on my system, but the more recent one is where I would expect it in winntsystem32. I tried to rename the other one, and I got a sharing violation. I’ll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.
