While I posted this under Outlook 2016, it is also happening to a friend who uses Outlook 2003.  Both of us have Yahoo accounts that we use on Outlook via POP3.  (There is no Exchange server; personal use only.)

For roughly 6 months now, every time I send a Yahoo email from Outlook using Yahoo’s smtp server, a copy of the email also shows up in Yahoo webmail’s (website) Sent Folder.  This never happened in years past, and seems bizarre (again this is POP3, not IMAP).  Since I first reported it to them, Yahoo CS has told me upon repeated inquiries (about every 4 weeks) that their engineers are definitely still working on it, please be patient.  I suppose it’s to their credit that they never once tried to blame it on Outlook or incorrect settings on my (and my friend’s) part.

I haven’t re-contacted them since the pandemic hit the US, but the issue remains.  While I doubt anyone has a solution (though any ideas are welcome!), can anyone offer further confirmation of the issue or explain *how* it might be occurring?

I have Windows 7 with ESU, friend has 8.1

Yes, some servers can be configured to do that, it’s a desired feature for corporate users at least.

The “how” is very simple- the server must be doing an automatic copy. I mean, they get a copy because you’re sending it using their SMTP server, and they choose to put it there instead of just discarding it…

In a sort of similar situation I’ve run into IMAP users getting each message in the sent folder twice … server copy and local copy, both.

      Haven’t used Yahoo myself though.

Hmm, then I wonder if perhaps this change is by design, and the CSR’s (or engineers) are just misinformed (or, more cynically, don’t want to talk about it for some reason).  While I’m not about to test it (don’t want to screw anything up), I wonder if this is also happening to people who have Outlook configured to delete messages from the server once downloaded?  (I choose to keep them there, as a backup, but tick “remove from server when deleted from ‘Deleted Items.'”)
