Is there a field code (or switch) that will show the TRUE page number. Page numbers have been manipulated on a section by section basis (sections start at page 1, for example). Can I also add second page number (in the footer) that reflects the real page (the one displayed on the status bar in the fraction: ie, I am in Section 2, page ii, and the page count shows 55/102 – in this example, I’d like the 55 to print in addition to the ii).

    THANKS!

This is not trivial. Microsoft has instructions in KB article Q212313.

You need to add complicated nested fields at the beginning of each section of your document and in the page footer.

I have attached a small document where this has been done. I made it in Word 97 where automatic updating of page numbers is flaky, so you may have to select everything in the footer and recalculate (F9).

The fields at the beginning of each section are hidden. If you want to examine them, turn on field codes (Alt+F9). Be careful that you don’t accidentally remove them when they’re hidden.
