I have several faculty who are working on their promotion packets. They need a numbering scheme to allow section numbers as well. example. 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1 3.2 etc. I have gone through the explanation on MS home page, creating the styles and linking to the level however when I apply this style the words “section 1” appear in the document. When I try to backspace to delete the wording, then of course the style doesn’t work. I understand why but I am hoping for an easier solution.

Doesn’t one of the Bullets & Numbering/Outline Numbered tab do that for you? I think, bottom row, 2nd from left.

Also, I haven’t used it, but the {Autonum GL} field.

Yes – that is great but how do I get the word “section1” off of my page? I don’t want it to print. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Offhand, I’m not sure. If I get time, I’ll play around with it. Maybe you can go into Bullets & Numbering & modify that list gallery. I thought there was a way to get the “Section” or “Chapter” part out of the numbering. In fact, I thought you had to do something to get it in, in the first place. I’m not sure at this point. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

With your insertion point in a paragraph that has your numbering outline’s “Level 1” style applied to it, go into Format/Bullets and Numbering.
You will see that one of the gallery positions, under the Outline Numbering tab, is already highlighted, and it should be displaying your numbering outline.
          Click on Customize.
In the Customize Numbering dialog, you should see a text area under the heading “Number format”, which will display your numbering format – it will probably have “Section 1.” displayed in it.
Simply delete the word “Section” and then OK your way out of the dialogs.

It sounds like you’re using a Heading 2 style to apply the 1.1, 2.1, etc. numbering. You can’t do this in Heading 1, because it needs a prior style to refer back to to create the number before the period. So you’ve created a Heading 1 style that you want to include, but not show. Is that right? If it is, you’ll need to include a Heading 1 paragraph at the beginning of each section to make the numbering work. If you make sure that the font for the heading number is set to Hidden Text, the number (Section 1 in this case) will appear on the screen if you have Show/Hide turned on, but will not print. You can either include hidden text in the style definition or apply it directly to each Heading 1 paragraph.
