I’m working on a mail merge. The page numbering in the second section is being flaky. As long as the document is 4 pages long, the numbering is fine. A few of the letters in the merge go to 5 pages. The header reads Page 5 of 4. I’ve tried using the SectionPages field, but it doesn’t help. Anyone have any suggestions? I’m sure I’m overlooking something very simple and can’t see it because of the frustration on this particular merge. (I’ve managed to fix everything else.)

Do you know if the problem is reproducible in 2000 or 97?

I don’t know about 97, but it is reproducible in 2000.

I’m not sure about 2002, but Word 2000 (& 97) had page x of y problems that were solved with a service release. With Word 2000, it was SR-1a that fixed it. For Word 2000, the instructions are here. Sorry, but I don’t know about Word 2002.

Just another thought, have you tried going into the header & pressing F9 to update the fields?

I did try updating the fields, still didn’t work. I’ll see if the service release for 2002 addresses this as well.

        Thanks for the information.

A couple of techniques that worked (sometimes) to fix the bug in Word 2000, prior to the patch, was to:
          1. Untick background printing (Tools/Options/Print tab).
          2. Tick the option for reverse print order.
          3. Turn off show/hide (don’t ask me why),
          4. Use a formula to calculate the numpages field:
          { IF {page} = {numpages} {numpages} {numpages}} where the curly brackets are placed using Ctrl+F9
This basically told Word that if the page number equaled the number of pages, use numpages, else use numpages. This forced a calculation.

          Good luck!
