Hi Dave,
When the computer reboots, it says, “your paging file maybe missing or not properly set.” It then gives instructions on how to get to system properties/advanced/performance tab. Then it tells me to set the virtual memory to 1.5 times the system memory. I have tried setting both, per Microsoft Tech notes, to 1350. When I reboot after making these changes, it gives me the same error message. I have been following the information that was on Microsoft web site regarding this problem. They give no other help if this solution does not work. Thanks

Try setting it to 192. =128+(128×0.5). Or if you have 256Mb RAM, use 384 and soon. Why 1350? You don’t have 900Mb RAM – or do you?

I don’t think that it’s improperly set – you have more than enough, it sounds like. Your page file can be set to smaller sizes as the RAM increases unless you are doing memory intensive stuff – Photoshop comes to mind.

If you have different partitions, try moving it. System performance improves when the paging file is on a different volume.

Do you notice any excessive disk thrashing or activity? Any system performance degradation? Or is it just an annoying error message that seems to have no basis in reality?

And lastly….where in the reboot process does the error appear? Is it as the desktop loads, or before that when the logon screen would normally appear?

I would also check permissions on the file/volume just to be safe – perhaps it has a ‘deny’ assigned to it.

Is there 1.4 GIG free on the specified drive? Try changing that 1350 to something a little smaller, like 256.

I have over 7gigs free on the hard drive. I have tried setting it low and again high. After I reboot the computer, I get the same error message. I even found a site that showed how to go into the system registry to manual change the setting. That did not work. Is there a file in the root directory called pagefile.sys? I can see all the hidden files and that one is not there. Thanks

Have you set the Initial and Max sizes to the same value? Recommended by some.
In taskmanager, what does it typically show your memory usage to be? (e.g. mine shows 116052K / 751724K)

My memory usage show 151868k/523764k. I have tried setting them the same in min/max settings. Should I try and you the “repair” feature of Windows 2000 to fix this problem? Thanks

My windows 2000 is on “c” drive. My page file.sys is in the root of “C” drive. I’ve been told the setting will only stick if you go into System Properties>Performance Options and change the setting from there. I did this when I added ram and it worked for me. I know there are a few people that move their Pagefile to other partitions. I don’t know how that would apply.

I have followed the fixes that I have seen at a couple different sites. It still has not resolved my problem with this error. I have reset the setting in the Performance tab. When I reboot the computer, I still get this error.
