I have a new laptop with no physical serial port. It has IR and I have a targus USB cable. Any ideas as to how to install and start a hot sync?
    Thanks

If the laptop has a usb port you could get a usb cradle for your handheld then setup your software as normal. You could also look into the possibility of hotsyncing over IR, but that would take a very long time.

Of course, the old stand-by is to type everything in twice!

The problem seems that the hot sync software needs a serial port, ie a virtual serial port that either the IR or the USb uses to fake out the software. That is the problem.

What software are you using? The latest Palm Desktop software supports USB connections.

I am probably using an old one. I will download and update

Do pardon me if you already know this. From either the Palm Desktop (which I don’t use) or by right-clicking the HotSync Tray Icon when HotSync is loaded, you can set the type of connection, see attachment. And you have to have the appropriate connector for your particular PDA.
