Some time back my hard disk in BMW started to reboot regularly so I suspected hardware issues. I did backup of disk without any errors being reported but some time later the disk failed completely. So I sourced a new disk.

When I attempt to restore I am invited to select destination. For four partitions I am able to select OK. But for the fifth and sixth I only get response “Reset Destination” so I cannot proceed with the restore process. Am I making a fundamental error somewhere? Any advice appreciated.

I’m running Paragaon Hard Disk Manager 17 on Win11. Target disk is USB SSD 128GB with single 119.24GB unallocated partition. Recovery folder contents are attached.

    Thanks, Paul

You cannot have more than 4 primary partitions on a standard MBR disk.
According to this article, BMW use their own file system so you can’t use a standard backup / restore arrangement – you have to do a bit by bit copy.

Thanks @Paul T your reply makes perfect sense as the disk I retrieved from the BMW had exactly the same partition structure.

I was able to do a surface scan successfully using Paragon and also a backup which did not report errors. Then the disk finally failed. Will Paragon have backed up all six partitions? Is it possible to tell this from the backup folder structure? If so is it possible to restore all six partitions? If so how?

        Many thanks, Paul

Try to restore the entire disk, not just individual partitions.

Your other option would be to convert your new disk from MBR to GPT (which allows more than 4 partitions) and then you should be able to restore the extra partitions.

It won’t work as GPT methinks because the disk is shown as “basic”.

It won’t work as GPT methinks because the disk is shown as “basic”.

GPT disks also show up as “Basic” in Windows Disk Management.

      GPTdisk

To tell if a disk is MBR or GPT you have to right-click the grey colored section where it shows the disk is “Basic“, select “Properties” in the context menu, select the “Volumes” tab in the properties window and the Partition style: item will show whether it’s MBR or GPT.

@Paul T and @alejr  your ideas led me to spot some simple mistakes I was making. Configuring volumes and partitions is not one of my special skills but I got there in the end. My BMW still doesn’t work with the new disk but that is a software issue that I will now seek a solution for.
Thank you both for your help.
