My wife’s computer runs Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003. Lately, she has had difficulty with a dialog box pop up which says:
    ________________________________
    Enter Network Password
Server: smtp.gmail.com (sometimes it says pop.gmail.com)
    Username: [my wife’s gmail address]@gmail.com
    Password: **************
[ ] Save this password in your password list
    [OK] [Cancel]
    ______________________________________

She clears the box and it pops right back up. This has been going on for several days. Today, for another reason, she changed her google password. Now there is an outgoing message that’s hung up and won’t transmit. I suspect that we need to tell Outlook google’s current password. Would typing in her most recent valid google password in the dialog box make the dialog boxes go away? What do you think is the best approach to clear this mess?

I would log onto the gmail website and confirm that all is well.

BTW, are you using the SSL / TLS ports for secure connection?

      cheers, Paul

When the dialog boxes popped up again, I entered the must current Google password and told it to save the password. That seemed to quell the problem and the stuck message also went out. To be really thorough, I opened the mail configuration app in Outlook and entered the current password for Google for both SMTP and POP and clicked on the check box to save it. Things now seem to be working just fine. Thanks for the reply.

      Hi Llyn,

Even though you seem to have solved your login problem, I will add a comment that might help others under a specific circumstance that has similar behaviors.

IF you have opted for Google’s “2-step verification” feature (a.k.a., two-factor security), you will have to go to the security tab in your Google account and create a special password for each of several apps you had previosly logged into without problems, such as your Gmail through Outlook. The old apps will just suddenly ask for log-in information, but not take the password that historically worked. If this happens to you, ask yourself whether you opted in to Google’s 2-step verification.
