Did you notice the typos and run-on sentences in today’s article?

I like Password Tech it is not only portable, it cam also very easily o create one or hundreds of passwords in no time at all. It can create strong passwords with letters, symbols, and numbers that look like complete gibberish (hackers hate gibberish). It can also create strong pronounceable passwords and strong pattern-based passwords, if you want something easier to associate with an account. You can use Password Tech to create hundreds of passwords at once and save the list to a file or to the Windows Clipboard.

I am surprised there is no mention of Password Safe.  I have been using this for years both on my PC and Android phone.  It is open source and offers lots of options in terms of how long the password should be and what characters should be used.

I was about to comment on the same thing.  Been using it for years as well.  It’s also portable and you can copy the safe to your cloud storage of choice or sync it to your phone for access to your passwords where ever you are.  Password Safe.

FWIW, Gibson Research offers a password generator.

I have used Roboform password manager for many years. It recognises when you are being asked for a new password, will offer to generate a complex one for you and then save it. I don’t have experience of other password managers but I would have thought this would be a standard feature, thus making standalone password software redundant.

I also use Roboform.  I may have 400 login passwords saved and they are all unique and the master password is also unique.  For some reason, maybe advertising dollars, it never makes it into the top tier of recommended managers online, but I really like it.

I am surprised there is no mention of (insert name of fav manager here)

Deanna reviews free and open source software, usually one app at a time. Therefore this is not a “password manager review”.

I am leery of password managers because of my experiences with programs being discontinued. Intuit discontinued ‘Medical Expense Manager’ which made my life much easier, because M$ discontinued .NET 1. I’ve been disabled for 40 years, and it was a true blessing in managing my bills and visits. Trusteer was discontinued; I could go on but won’t. My PC’s have crashed so many times and even with backups, I lost tons of valuable data and memories. I’ve spent more on tech support (some of it abominable as well as expensive-more than the blasted PC cost!). I used to love computing and helped friends with their issues. Not any more. Now I have to deal with getting a new computer because of Windows 11. I’ll have to buy new versions of the programs I use, which fortunately have been severely reduced. As a widow on a fixed income, I don’t appreciate these changes. And I HATE AI! I have Siri turned off on my iPhone and unplugged the camera/mic on my PC… I bought an Apple phone when the FDA approved the Apple watch 5 as a medical device. An update crashed my phone and I was unable to get an Advanced Recovery, so I lost everything there as well. They won’t even let me unpair the watch from the old account to use with the new account on my phone! Every ‘update’ from either company causes more problems than it solves…

Password managers are great and if you use one that supports a common format (KeePass), then you don’t have to worry about it being discontinued.

As for backups, we use and recommend several, free and paid, that we have proven work exactly as expected and allow recovery of all your data. Look in the Backup forum.

You don’t need a new computer because your existing may run 11 and if it doesn’t, 10 will be fine for a while yet – keep an eye out for Susan’s articles on how to keep 10 running, just as we do for 7.
You also don’t need new programs, they should all transfer to a new machine without issue.

Why don’t you start a new thread in the W10 forum with those questions.

        cheers, Paul

I use KeePassXC in combination with my vault being stored on all my devices using SyncThing which I host on my TrueNAS server. I can access my passwords from anywhere, using my own “cloud”. Win/win.
