I am really hoping/interested in what you might suggest for those wanting SBS / Essentials features on Server 2019 . . . or beyond.

Been following you for many years as the SBS Diva, can’t tell you how many times your articles saved me.

The most recent guidance on the topic I can find from you is at:

Actually, question for those who have managed to find the 2019 essentials license text … does it still have a clause that requires it to be a member of a domain and sole AD server?

Because one role where Server Essentials pricing would be nice, would be as a non-volume licensed (as in buy just one) alternative to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC for things like instrumentation control stations for small businesses… no domain, just drive the expensive tool. If the license allows that kind of thing now?

Of course I’d really need to see the local translated license text but in the 2016 version the translation was fairly straightforward…

For some reason the MS detailed licensing information links seem to throw errors at me.

Sadly, that instrumentation is deprecated in 2019 stand alone. However, if you subscribe to Azure connect, you do get some shiny new admin toys. Which defeats the whole purpose of the old Essentials / SBS roles for the SMB.

Which is very likely the point — the days of huge feature sets at a steep discount for the very small business appear to be over.

The Windows Server Essentials Experience Role has been removed from all server SKUs, including Windows Server 2019 Essentials. This means that the Administrative Dashboard that used to be the core feature for Essentials Experience Role is no longer accessible and all management and configuration must be completed manually.

With Server Essentials Experience Role deprecation, the following features are no longer available:

        Client backup
        Remote web access

I deeply lament the passing of Windows Home Server. It was one of the most brilliant, useful pieces of software Microsoft has ever devised.

Woody – if you’re talking about WHS2011 or its earlier equivalents, I second your motion of lament.
