GuestJune 15, 2016 at 9:15 am #40832What do you make of the reports by some of the AskWoody readers that the KB 3161664 “speed up” patch is failing to install?
I read the EP post where he indicates it’s the right patch fixing the long delay update search yet I’ve seen at least 2 people, maybe 3, reporting failed installation.
You or EP have any thoughts on this? -

GuestJune 15, 2016 at 10:02 am #40834Remember edge is just IE 11 running in tile mode (aka appcontainer integrity level), with almost all the features removed and a slight update to the UI.
Removed feature include site zones (can be used to block ads, junk sites), tracking protection (can be used to block ads, junk sites), plugins (wide variety of features)
edge = half broken IE
IE11 rendering engine (since IE11’s release) = Edge -

GuestJune 15, 2016 at 12:07 pm #40836To expedite things, I’ve installed the KB3161664 stand-alone installer on several Win 7 SP1 machines without any problems. In every case, the responsiveness of Windows Updates was fully restored.
KB3161664 can be downloaded at https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS16-073 . Restart Windows before performing the installation (a restart after installation will also be required).

3 Updates failed today, but after restarting the computer, I tried installing them again and then the 3 remaining updates installed successfully.
But since I couldn’t find any useful information about this particular error, I thought you would probably know a thing or two about it.

AskWoody PlusJune 15, 2016 at 5:30 pm #40839I tried this twice. The first time the offline installer for the KB3161664 patch churned saying it was searching for updates on the laptop for 45 minutes still on 0%. I cancelled it, rebooted and turned off the internet connection.
This time the offline installer went for an hour on 0%. I again cancelled and rebooted.
When I first tried to run the standard WU it took over 50 minutes with no progress. So I tried the first standalone installer mentioned in Para 1. I then tried it off line as above.
Finally, after the failure of the MSU to work, I was able to get a list with the regular WU after 90 minutes. When I selected only the KB3161664 update for installation, WU sate for well over 90 minutes without any progress. Laptop is an Intel i5 dual core.
Even my i7 desktop took 30 minutes to get a list. I installed the KB3161664 update first and then rebooted for the rest with minimal delay.
Rather than buying LinkedIn, MS should have invested in more update servers.
I will try again in a few days. If next month is this bad, hello Linux laptop. Never Win10 to reward MS for their sabotage efforts.
Microsoft reminds me of the US auto industry in the 1970s – a shell of their former selves pedaling bad product.
If Apple came out with a lower cost loss leader, they would clean up. 3 colleagues just bought Apple laptops for their kids due to the mess of Windows 7 GWX and bad legacy AIO printer/scanner driver support in Win10.

The KB 3153199 patch from May had restored sanity to the auto update search by reducing the search time to under 2 minutes. As soon as June’s patch Tuesday came around the auto update search took a little over an hour with CPU spike and high fan speeds. But, it did produce a list of Security Updates ( I use Check for updates but let me choose…)
At the suggestion of EP I installed KB 3161664 through the normal Windows Update method. This morning, the auto check for update took under one minute.
Thanks to EP for the solution and thanks to Woody for giving EP a platform.

GuestJune 16, 2016 at 2:43 pm #40841It means your computer is too fast and you triggered a timing error in the CBS system, it tried to start a new CBS session before the old one finalized.
Windows(update) said: “Hey windows(CBS) integrate this update now or for the next reboot”
Windows(CBS) said: “Can’t, CBS_E_BUSY”
Windows(update) said: “WHAT?? What do you mean?”
Windows(CBS) said: “I can’t integrate updates now! I am integrating updates. You asked a split second before I was ready to talk to you.”
Windows(update) said: “Ok install failed, will try again someday.” -

GuestJune 17, 2016 at 2:10 am #40843I had the same problem with the June 2016 updates.
I have 2 windows 7 64 bit computers. 2 days ago I tried in vane to install the new updates but after using the windows standalone system to install kb 3161664, (even that took forever) the remaining updates followed.
As far as the other laptop was concerned I tried constantly yesterday to use the standalone system to install kb 3161664 and nothing happened. I even did a system cleanup and tried to repair windows update. All to no avail.
I eventually stopped trying at 10.30pm.
This morning at 5am I switched on the computer and kb 3161664 installed immediately. I restarted the computer left it for 10 minutes and all the rest of the updates were available and installed within 20 minutes.
Why is this happening every month? Are we likely to suffer this problem continuously? Is everyone at Microsoft having a laugh at windows 7 users? -

AskWoody_MVPJune 17, 2016 at 6:24 am #40845Logically to me it makes little sense that KB3161664 resolves the Windows Update slowness. It supersedes a lot of previous updates, but it only supersedes one more than KB3153199 which should not make much difference.
However I can confirm that subjectively it appears to make a difference when installed standalone as the first update for June 2016. -

I am in minority believing that IE11 (and IE10) are very good and competitive browsers at the same level with Firefox and a lot more secure than Chrome which sacrifices security for functionality. Nothing wrong with Chrome’s approach, only that the end-users should be well aware of this aspect.
Edge is NOT a good browser. At least not yet. -

Glad to see that a passionate IT person feels the same way about IE that I (not an IT person) do.
I use it, and I don’t see what’s so much better, all things considered, about the rival ones (looking at them at the present moment, notwithstanding their past reputations). -

GuestSeptember 2, 2016 at 5:51 pm #40849KB3156417 revisited (and not to the good): two computers went down here, symptoms were a slowing down and finally would not shut off – waited an hour. Restored one with an image file from April and started loading MS updates one by one. When KB3156417 was loaded – crashed again. Safe mode removed ‘417 – been OK ever since.
KB3156417 no longer appears in Updates, imagine that!
