I think Susan needs to update her article “A Japanese era begins; an older Windows era struggles” regarding Avira as both Microsoft and Avira updated their KB articles about the slowdown issues with the April 2019 updates.

quote from Microsoft KB article 4493472 for windows 7 (updated May 3):
      https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4493472/windows-7-update-kb4493472

Avira has released an automatic update to address this issue. Guidance for Avira customers can be found in the Avira support article.

Avira support article “Why does my system run very slow?” (updated May 6):
      https://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/1976

We have looked into the issue that you described, where the system slows down after a Windows update, and have found a way to fix it.

We have recently released an update that should fix this issue. Your Avira Product will be automatically updated, and you don’t have to do anything else in the product.

If you have uninstalled the incompatible Windows Update, you can now restore it using the Windows Update function.

that now leaves only McAfee to issue their own software updates later this May that will resolve the slowdown issues with the April 2019 Windows updates.
