    PATCH WATCH

Patching Windows — the Windows 8.1 Update edition

    By Susan Bradley

When Microsoft released Windows 8.1 Update, it threw some of us a curve ball. To continue receiving security patches, Win8.1 users must install Win8.1 Update by May 13. Here’s how to add this unusual patch. Plus: Updates for Internet Explorer, MS Security Essentials for XP, and those leftover nonsecurity fixes from April’s Patch Tuesday.

Thanks for the all-clear on the non-security patches from 8 April.

Do you have any feedback/recommendations on KB2952664 which appears to be for Windows 7 (SP1) only? 2952664 was the only new patch MS offered me on 22 April.

      Thanks

This update is intended to make things work better if you upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8/8.1. If you do not plan to do that you may safely ignore it.

Also any recommendation on KB2863811 (non-security update resolving an Outlook issue of inability to connect to SharePoint after installing February update)?

      Thanks

I installed that one nearly three weeks ago without any issues.

Some issues with your instructions–in downloading the individual updates, I can only find the -x86 versions. I followed your instructions, but in attempting to install the first one, I get the error message that it’s not applicable to my computer. Looked for the 64 bit versions of these files, but they are nowhere to be found on Microsoft’s website.

        Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355)
