• PDF Error while printing from Word

Occasionally wherever I have section breaks in a Word file, and when successive sections have different orientations, and I am creating a PDF of the whole file, I find that only the first landscape page after a series of portrait pages prints right; from the second page onwards, all pages in the landscape section print portrait and hence get truncated.

I am using Word 2000 and print using Acrobat Distiller as printer driver.

I do not face this problem if I print directly to a Postscript compatible printer or even a Laserjet 6L directly from Word.

Of course, I can remedy it by separately printing only the erroneous pages to another PDF file and replacing these pages in the PDF.

The error persists even if I create a Postscript PRN file first and then distill it.

    What could be amiss?

Try using the pdf writer as the printer driver instead of acrobat distiller. If you are using a full version of Adobe Acrobat, which it sounds like you are, you should have this capability. Good Luck.

The problem with using the PDF writer instead of the distiller is you don’t get an index. It’s quicker, and on small documents it may not be necessary to have an index, I just wanted to point that out, as some need that feature. I find the distiller to be prone to problems, whereas I never have problems with the writer. YMMV.

        Thanks, GirlFriday and Balby

Adobe themselves recommend somewhere in their Help documentation that PDF Writer not be preferred in certain kind of applications; among other shortcomings, the PDF file will be of lower resolution than acceptable to most hi-quality printing presses. I need to use Distiller (and troubleshoot)for these reasons.

If you need to use the distiller, try doing it another way then. If you have printer drivers for a post script printer, then print using those printer drivers, but save it as a post script (or prn) file. Then use the distiller to generate the pdf from the printer file.
