Adobe Acrobat is a powerful and useful program, but the $15pm subscription is way too much.

I am still using an old and unsupported version of Acrobat, and set the computer to default to open any PDFs in Chrome in case of malware etc.

I wonder if there is an open source alternative that covers the main attributes I value:

    • adding passwords.
    • creating PDFs from multiple documents.
    • organising PDFs – delete and insert pages.
    • scanning documents to PDF

    Many thanks

I use PrimoPDF which will handle the first two requirements on the list. It’s free and installs as a printer so you can create pdfs from any source. It also provides the the option to append to an existing file when you specify a file name that already exists.

I use Foxit Reader, also free, to handle my pdf reading and annotation requirements.

Most scanners bundled software will allow you to scan directly to PDF files.

As for the need to slice and dice a pdf file I can’t offer any advice since I haven’t had the need.

It appears that Primo Free only goes up to Windows 7 according to what I see when I click on it on their site. ??? Any thoughts. Thanks for your post.

I use PDF-XChange Editor by Tracker Software.

It has extensive editing capabilities but a full license is $46.50 (never expires).

      Is it free to use?
More than 70% of the features in PDF-XChange Editor do not require a license to use. The remaining features, which are clearly identified, will place a ‘trial’ watermark on output if they are used without a license.

You should also check out PDFill Free PDF Editor. I use this for my PDF Printer needs and some combining/splitting of PDF Files.

I just use the Foxit Reader Free and my scanner does PDF so never had the need to do anything else. If I remember correctly you can change docs to PDF with Reader.

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂
