A charity that I volunteer for has a notebook that it plans to give another charity. However, the notebook has files with member information. I believe that if we simply delete the files, then empty the recycle bin, the files are still on the computer and could be recovered. My question is, is there software or a way to delete the files so that they are not recoverable, without wiping the hard drive and rebuilding it. We want to be careful to protect our members personal information.

    Thanks

You could for example copy a large folder like the C:Windows folder to a dummy folder in order to create more files on the disk that would then erase the old files. Repeat as many times as needed to fill 70% of the disk, then run a software to defragment files (right-click on C:, then Properties, tab “Tools” and Defragmentation). Repeat a couple of times the defragmentation. Finally, fill the whole disk with garbage files and then wipe this dummy folder.

Not as good as a real wipe out of the entire hard disk, but pretty close.

Also if this machine has a “Recover to Factory Setting” option I would use it, as it can wipe the drive clean and start over.

If you have Spybot S&D on your computer you could use the Shredder option – just move the required files over and set the number of ‘shreds’ you wish. Useful tool if you know which/what files you want to ensure are permanently deleted. I know Spybot doesn’t get a very good press these days, but it’s still a useful tool to have at ones disposal, whether you actually use it or not.

      Hi Dave :

I have seen security Expert Bruce Schneier recommend “BC Wipe”,
      available at http://www.jetico.com/data-protection-wiping-bcwipe-enterprise/ .

Yes, clean install, but use a disc over-write tool prior to doing so and preferably a dos-like tool that could be
booted to and run a full format with over writes prior to reinstalling your os.
You didn’t specify the os version so you will have to search for something compatible and make it bootable.
A simple google search should come up with something, most likely free.

I have used Darik’s Boot and Nuke to wipe my old hard drives clean:
