Several times a day, lately, when I click on a link to read something I get a pop-up advert totally unrelated to what I am seeking.  The desired page loads, too, but behind the intruder.  This didn’t happen for most of my years in computing but it’s very common now.  What can I do to stop it?

Different browsers have different settings, function in different ways.
So, what browser are you using?
      What extensions on the browser?
What website(s) does this occur on?
What browser settings do you have for popups, ads, etc?
Is the link on a webpage, in the address bar?
Yes, we could use more information.

Install uBlock Origin for your browser.

I have Firefox and use uBlock  Origin plus Popup Blocker Ultimate some times if uBlock doesn’t work.

1.) Brave browser, 2.) Blockzilla extension/app, and 3.) if you use Fakebook, then Fluff Blusting Purity is good.

In addition to uBlock Origin that Alex5723 recommended, I use the Privacy Badger extension. I find it very helpful blocking pop-ups and widgets. I use Brave browser.

I use Firefox and use the Behind the Overlay extension. When a popup such as ‘subscribe here’ etc. pops up, click the Overlay extension and it removes the popup, without one having to click on said popup.

With the latest v2024.7.17 Privacy Badger update for firefox..the release notes state (amoungst others):

Disabled Google’s “Privacy Sandbox” ad tracking by default. We previously disabled Google’s Topics API; we now also disable “site-suggested ads” (ad targeting) and “ad measurement” (ad attribution reporting) APIs…

      Nice work EFF 🙂

You should show us a screenshot of a pop-up advert (to help identify the origin).

Often I find that the site has snuck in a “notifications” in the browser. If you go and search for notifications settings on whatever browser is your default – my guess is that is what is triggering it
