Ever since I upgraded from Win10 to Win11 Pro on one of my computers, I have been having problems with Windows Updates. I think the problem is Acronis True Image Backup. I know  that one of the modules, Try & Decide, conflicts with Win11’s Core Isolation. If you turn off Core isolation, you can not re-enable it without disabling tib.sys. Here is a quote from one of the members of the Acronis Forums.

    ACRONIS – TIB.SYS & Core Isolation
rename the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\tib.sys file then do a Windows restart, i.e. I renamed the file to tib.~sys

Anyway, today I was updating Win11 to KB5040527 and as usual, it failed. After rebooting, and trying again, I got it to update. This has been the normal procedure for one of my machines, while another computer I have on Win11 updates normally.

So, I thought about trying again with Acronis removed entirely. I restored a previous backup, and I uninstalled Acronis, and then I re-ran the update, and voila, it updated fine. I then reinstalled Acronis.

I mention this only in the event others are having Windows Update problems and have Acronis True Image installed.

I’ve come to the conclusion that as long as you don’t mess around with the Win11 Core Isolation, (like turning the switch off which allows the Acronis Try & Decide tib.sys driver load), there “should” be no conflicts. I can’t guarantee this is the fix, but it’s worth investigating if like me, you are having Windows Update issues.

Also, I had previously tried a few over the top installations and they have all failed. Anytime I have tried to update a machine with Acronis installed, it has failed. I have not been able to update from Win10 to Win11 on two machines. I had to clean install on both of them. So, that is my next test. My plan is to uninstall Acronis the next time I try an Over The Top fix or if I decide to upgrade one of my other machines from Win10 to Win11.

why not update the Acronis True Image app to at least the 2021 version, which seems to be Windows 11 compatible and most Win11 users don’t seem to have any issues with the 2021 version rather than the 2020 version you are currently using

why not update the Acronis True Image app to at least the 2021 version,

There is no version 2021 and everything after 2020 is the subscription model. The issue is the Try & Decide feature, which is a sandbox to test software.

The plan was (and may have already happened) is that they are making Try & Decide an add-on module, that can optionally be installed. But unless things have changed, in order to use Try & Decide, Win11’s core isolation would still have to be disabled.

ETA: I have versions 2019 & 2020 and they both work fine with Win11, besides the Try & Decide issue.

ETA 2: I think there might have been a 2021 perpetual license that they renamed to “Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office” mid year and turned it into subscription. Now they recently renamed THAT back to “Acronis True Image.”

actually there was a 2021 version according to this support article

Acronis True Image 2021 and earlier versions are not going to have official support of Windows 11, even though we have not heard of any significant compatibility issue. You may use Acronis True Image of any version on Windows 11 at your own risk.

darn, I should have looked at that support article first

perhaps ask about the “Try & Decide” feature in the Acronis Forums and get a response there

Yeah, You’re correct.  I forgot it was in 2021 that they switched to Subscription. I updated my post.

I’ve been in contact with that forum for a number of years, so I knew it was an issue when Win11 first came out. I had only tried Win11 recently.

The incompatability issue in win 11 was the straw that broke the camels back for me with Acronis. It had become slow, bloated and then a subscription model.  I deleted it and bought a 4 seat version of Macrium, which is just a backup program and works very well.

We are using Acronis True Image for Western Digital, Version 2023, Build 39673.

How do we find out if “Try & Decide” is a component of the Western Digital version?

I did the same thing as you. With version 2020, I got burned by the Acronis change to .tibx when I needed to recover and it could not find the chain of backups. The fix for that is to first install Acronis 2019, do a .tib backup and then install 2020, which retains the .tib format on a backup created by earlier versions.

But, at that point, I started using Macrium Reflect Free as a backup to Acronis. Then when Macrium had a sale, I bought a 4 seat version as well. I’ve come to like Macrium better at this point, although for new users, the retail price has become exorbitant. IMHO. If I were to be in the same spot as I was then, I would stick with the free version.

Since I legally own both versions now, I just backup with both. Suspenders and a belt. 😁

Same here, almost.  I first used True Image 2011, then 2012, then 2014 which has been reliably getting it done… until today when I tried to put it on Win-11 and the incompatible tib.sys driver caused the install to fail.   Turning off security features is a non-starter, so Thanks for the tips on Macrium!
