write a reply, go through the the captcha, click submit, and get error message about “are you sure you want to do that?”

then have to enter reply text again (hopefully i remembered to copy before sending since it fails so often), and either go through the captcha, submit routine again.  or maybe it just submits without captcha.

what does it take to get submit to work the first time?

A registered user should never see a captcha.

      Log in before posting?

Make sure you are logged in. Captcha shows for those who are not logged in.

Create your text with a text editor. Then copy and paste into the editbox. If the “submit” fails, you can paste and submit again.

Can you give me a screen shot of when you are seeing a captcha because you truly shouldn’t see one if you are logging in.

i am logged in.   vivaldi browser (chromium based)    addins: roboform, linkstash, mail link to, ad nauseum, canvas blocker

this is the second time writing, since the first time got the error message above.

this time only the submit button is there, no “i am not a robot” which gets the captcha.  nothing has changed re log in.

Canvas blocker may be interfering with Javascript functions.

    • #2457455

      I just set

Let see if that behaves any better, but it shouldn’t show you any captcha if you are logged in.  Can you send me your IP address as I can whitelist your IP as well.

When I am not logged in, this notice appears at the bottom-right-hand corner of my screen. (It is easily ignored and is company when reading.)

i may have discovered what is going wrong here.

currently,  when user who is not already logged in replies, they get the captcha.

if they login from the reply page, after starting a reply, they go to login page, then have to hit back,  then hit back again, then hit back again, to get back to the reply page, which is still not showing them logged in, until the page is manually refreshed, which  wipes out what has been entered in reply window. now the captcha won’t happen, but one re-enter the reply.

if the site can be set to notify about login before a reply is started,  or automatically return to the page where the login icon was clicked and update status without having to manually refresh, wiping out the previous entry, this would solve the issue.

        • #2457523

The site does notify you. If the Captcha is there, you are not logged in.

The way around it, when you notice the Captcha, is to highlight, right click, copy what is in the entry box. Log in. Then Right click paste the data into the logged-in entry box. Don’t use the back button. You can login on the page where you are entering.

What you were doing obviously didn’t work.
The website software is what it is.
If you continuing doing what you were doing, it still won’t work.
              Your choice.

      hmm,  i don’t see this.

      • #2457563

I just put in a bypass for 24.148.23.102

I’m guessing that a plug in is interacting with the site.  I would use a different browser with no plug ins and see if you get the same behavior.

Try this to resolve your logon problem:

      • Logon
      • Refresh your browser

      I’m done now.

I don’t want to get this discussion revived,  but do want to point out that my use of the word “general” in thread title was apparently a bad choice, open to misinterpretation.  I didn’t mean to imply that everyone (generally) has this problem, but that I ‘generally’ have the stated problem. sorry if misunderstanding created problems for others.

      • #2457752

Can you try it again?  I put in a bypass for you.

After you changed setting, i was allowed to submit without a captcha,  but my test post didn’t appear, and I got ‘error: are you sure you wanted to do that?”

so, I guess that I could login, hit back twice to get back to this post, refresh page to make my login take affect, and then enter my reply.

What I tried to express a few posts back, is that I am accustomed to forums where if I login while replying I am returned to the same reply page, with the login taking effect.  no double back, refresh, and re-entering reply.

I have changed cookie behavior in my browser for the askwoody site, so I should stay logged in, forever.   Unless askwoody changes cookie behavior.

Changing cookie behavior doesn’t work for me here and I can’t always remember to login before reading posts. Plus, different browsers act differently and too much to remember.

So, years ago, I found a wonderful app at Fx Addons site which I have been using all these years. (I also use it on Basilisk. It solves this problem for any site that I visit that has this sort of problem. (Pus, sometimes it is a cookie problem as I am very strict with cookies and Firefox no longer has a decent cookie control addon…the last good one works on Windows 8 and earlier and none of them are very useful on Windows 10).

It’s called Text Area Cache. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/textarea-cache/

I no longer worry about losing text, or forgetting to login, having to go back many hops, etc. Brave and Edge do not have this extension so I seldom use them if I am visiting forum sites. Plus, if there is a sudden power outage, this extension (when you have power again and boot up) has your precious text saved! I do use a Cyberpower UPS in case of a sudden power outage but on many sites text in a text box still gets lost but Text Area Cache saves it.

Mele10: gratifying to hear that I am not the only one having the login/posting issue here. Though, from past experience, I know that if I am having an issue, others are also.  Difference is that I take the time to write in about it.  Others either suffer with the problem, or just go elsewhere. but if administrators don’t hear about something, they can’t be expected to fix it. so, i take the time to report.

Good to know such an addon exists,  however I don’t use firefox much anymore, because their redesigns made my addons unusable.   I am using vivaldi, a chromium based browser, which has more usable features, and in my testing is, on average,  faster loading pages than firefox or edge.
