My computer is set to go to sleep when it reaches critical battery level, which is set at 13% when the computer is on battery. Sometimes, however, when the laptop is on battery, suddenly shuts down. When I turn the computer back on again, I see that the battery went below 13%. When I plug it in and turn it back on, it shows the battery meter at below 13%. I think what is happening is that it goes all the way down to 0% at times and then shuts down on me when the battery is drained. This probably happens half the time and the other half, the computer goes to sleep as it should. How can I get the latter to always happen?

AskWoody LoungerMay 24, 2010 at 7:31 pm #1225423I purchased this laptop, which came with the battery, less than two years ago in August of 2008. Another issue I have experienced is that my power icon has often displayed the message “plug in, not charging.” That makes little sense to me, as the laptop should be either plugged in or not charging; I can’t see how it can be plugged in and not charging. Also a sign for a new battery?

AskWoody LoungerMay 25, 2010 at 4:12 am #1225490I have to agree that this does not sound like a Windows problem, it sounds like a hardware problem. Dave’s suggestion that the charger should be checked out is sound. This might be the least costly option. If you know someone with another charger, or have a place to go check the charger then do so. A 2 year old battery could be having problems as well. I would think the battery should last longer than that, but who knows. The same method for checking the charger should be able to check the battery as well. If a known good charger will not charge the battery then…. If a know good battery will not charge on your charger…. Should not be a difficult troubleshooting problem.

AskWoody LoungerMay 25, 2010 at 5:08 pm #1225557I don’t think it’s the charger. I have tried three different chargers and the battery is not showing up as charging. I will have to order a new battery to see if the issue is the battery. By the way, the battery has had this issue in the past. But usually for only a couple of minutes or hours. This is the first day I have gone three days with it showing itself as not charging.
