Whenever I click on a mailchimp link, I get the pr_connect_reset_error on Firefox, and a similar error on Chrome and Safari. I have done quite a bit of Googling on this, tried all the suggestions I could find (clear cache, no proxy, firewall, anti-virus, about:config) without success. Any ideas?

This reads like it could be a problem with Mailchimp’s server or somewhere else in the way to Mailchimp’s content.

Sometimes the “pr_connect_reset_error” message can be caused by a server misconfiguration, and you should seek help from Mailchimp or report it Mailchimp support as a bug.

Thanks – yes, I have reported it. Their response has been underwhelming; 2 different people have responded with boilerplate that shows they did not even read my report details.

You have my sympathy that they do not seem to care. Perhaps the newsletter publisher/business you are being asked to subscribe to would like to know if they are losing business or readers because of this problem you are having, sometimes a client making a request of the newsletter service can get things moving along.

My guess is that it’s unique to his set up as the links work for me.

Given that you aren’t a plus member I’m guessing you aren’t referring to the mailchimp links we use for the newsletter?

Is the link you are clicking on from some other newsletter?  The SSL appears to be broken.

Can you disable Avast in the short term?

      cheers, Paul

      • #2571219

Thanks for the suggestion, Paul. Disabled Avast, cleared Firefox cache and restarted Firefox. Tried link again, same problem. Did the same with Chrome. Same problem.

    • #2571232

If you copy the link and then “Paste & Go” in Firefox?

      cheers, Paul

      • #2571236

No Paste & Go option in Firefox 102.13.0esr, only Paste. No different.

Whatever is causing the issue is in the browser. Weird that it happens in all browsers you’ve tried.

      cheers, Paul

Therefore caused by an extension which is present in all three?

    • #2571274

No extensions in Chrome, tried on different machine – Win 10 with Norton – still happens.

Could this be caused by the PepWave SurfSolo router or the Verizon FIOS box that feeds it?

        Same Anon, more questions…

Do you remember changing any normal OSX network settings or applying any unsupported fixes?

Do you use any Virtual Private Network (VPN) service?

Do you have Avast installed on all your computers?

Are you able to disable HTTPS scanning in Avast’s Web Shield?

Could this be caused by the PepWave SurfSolo router or the Verizon FIOS box that feeds it?

A direct connection to the Verizon FIOS gateway could decide if the PepWave SurfSolo (SoHo?) router is causing the “pr_connect_reset_error”.

Sure you can ask Peplink and Verizon for for help.

        Notes:
A faulty SSL certificate, or program library add-on can cause “pr_reset_errors”.

Also, from past experience disabling Avast may not completely work as described, there may be lingering protections still in place which may cause odd disruptions.

Do you remember changing any normal OSX network settings or applying any unsupported fixes? NO

Do you use any Virtual Private Network (VPN) service? NO

Do you have Avast installed on all your computers? Only this one

Are you able to disable HTTPS scanning in Avast’s Web Shield? Yes, tried that, no luck

The router should not interfere with URLs unless you have it set to inspect packets for malicious web sites. I don’t know if you can do this with a PepWave.

      cheers, Paul

Can you use your phone as a wifi hot spot and connect a machine to it to test the URL?
      Set the connection to metered.
      This will exclude the router.

      cheers, Paul

I tried the link from my phone using cellular data (not WiFi) and the link worked fine (Safari). So seems the problem has to do with WiFi connectivity. Will try using the phone as a hotspot for the laptop, as suggested, to rule out a browser problem.

        • #2571648

I used my iPhone hotspot to connect my laptop to the internet. Link worked like a charm. Back to WiFi and same error. So it def has something to do with the WiFi.

Only 2 things there – incoming Verizon FIOS router (WiFi turned off) feeding PepWafe surf solo.  Anyone have experience?

Is there a better WiFi/networking board than “Networking – routers, firewalls…” on AskWoody? Just crossposted there.
