Just got a new computer with Windows 2000 (had been running NT). After installing Office 2000, whenever I start MS Word, I get a dialog box:
    “Preparing to install”
    followed by another box:
“Please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 Standard”

It eventually comes up. Is there any way to disable these messages?

No other Office app does this.

If you run the set-up I believe you are offered a ‘Repair’ option. Might be worth running that.
Do you have W2K SP1 installed?

Repair didn’t change anything. Yes, I have SP1 installed.

This is a guess because I have Win98SE, but I know that during install, there is an option to Run from CD, etc. You might try a reinstall & choose custom.

That was my thought as well so I made sure that none of the major componets are set to run from the CD.

I just did a fresh, full install of Office 2000 Premium (not running from the CD or network) on a brand new computer, downloaded and installed SP-1, and I get exactly the same results as the original poster. It’s a minor inconvenience for me and I just live with it.

I know when I am using Windows 2000 and I make a NEW user, the first time that the new user uses Word or any other part of Office this message will appear. If I just let it do it’s thing I will not see it again unit a new user loggs in. With Windows 2000 each user gets there own copy of the Office settings including a PST file for Outlook 2000.

I’m the only user on this machine and I’m logged as the Administrator.

If you have a user account, loggin with it and see if you get theis same message EVERY time you open Word. One SHOULD NOT use the admin account as a default loggin for Windows 2000.

Created a new user and got the same behavior.

Guess what! It’a another Microsoft “feature”. Word 2000 has to reregister itself after you run Word 97. Maybe you could run a batch file or something that would reassociate .doc, etc. with Word 2000.

Not on this system. It was clean an _never_ had Office 97 on it.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to check the associations. Maybe, they’re not sticking for some reason. I’m not sure what registry entry is associated with that, but I think it’s under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

FYI – I ran into this problem at my old job and another “feature” of W2k is that once it’s installed it becomes your default when opening new docs from anywhere else (like an e-mail or windows explorer) even if the doc was originally created in W97 and you have both programs on your machine.

If you were working on something in W97 and went to explorer and opened another document, W2K would take over and install itself. (It is adamant about being the dominant program and it’s not too fond of other roosters in the hen house.)

              good luck
              have fun

Oops… saw that you never had 97…well, I guess the above may be useful for someone else… sorry I can’t help you out there Web…
              Good luck!!
