• Print formatted outline (2002)

Presently creating an outline for an upcoming report. On-screen, it looks good with all the automatic indents for the various Heading levels. When I Print Preview, the formatting reverts to the formats of the current style sheet, so that all of the indented items scurry back to the left margin. Am I correct in assuming the only way to print an Outline that resembles the on-screen view of the Outline is to create a new style sheet that sets all the indents of each individual Heading level?

Or is there an easier method that I am overlooking?

There is no print format for the Outline View; however, if you do a screen shot, Alt+Print Screen button and then paste into a new blank document, you could print that?? Hope this helps… trish

Would you get something useful by inserting a temporary table of contents? The TOC styles can be defined as you like.

Yes, you should modify the Heading 1, Heading 2, etc., styles to have the appropriate indents. It’s a bit time-consuming, but once you have it saved in one document or template, you will be able to copy it to future ones using the “Organizer.”

Thanks for the confirmation — that’s what I ended up doing. Took me a bit of time to find the Organizer. Also waded thru the Format > Theme menu, and eventually found the Style Gallery which is where I finally deposited the new template that I made. Not sure that I understand the purpose for “Themes” instead of the “Style Gallery” — I guess that’s another day’s task.

You can set the TOC styles the way you want your outline & then print the TOC. Or, if you wanted to do this in another document, you could use the {RD} field in a new document to create your TOCs & print several.

      Hello,

Though it doesn’t display correctly in print preview, when you print from Outline View, you’ll indeed get the formatted outline. I just verified on Word 2003.
