My PC stopped printing today which has happened once before.

    • Canon ip6700D which I would like to keep using (I like the print quality and features, AND I have a lot of cartridges)
    • But it does not have Win 10 drivers. Last time it stopped (and during initial install probably) I installed several “wrong” Canon drivers: I believe the winner was a Win 8.1 64 driver for ip6700D, but it might have been an ip6600D driver. I believe I got success by adding an “older printer not in the list” and choosing “I have disk” and pointing to the INF file. I followed two different solutions from a Microsoft Tech forum and eventually got it to work.
    • I have spent 3 hours on this (including this post) to no avail.

I guessed it must be a Win 10 update – my PC rebooted without my intervention several days ago. But my Win 10 Pro version is 1909 and was installed 9/5/19, so it must not be that.

Is it time to give up and buy a new printer?

Thanks much. This is more venting than expecting a solution.

      Hi Hobkirk,

Perhaps some of the recent KB[whatever] Win updates ‘fixed’ something for you. From time to time I get this, too, on my legacy Dymo Labelwriter drivers. Such voodoo happening on one’s system is annoying, to put it mildly.

From what I can see, Canon does still offer drivers for your ip6700D up to Win 8.1 (32&64 bit) on their website:

      https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/printers/inkjet/pixma_ip_series/pixma_ip6700d.html?type=drivers&language=en&os=windows%208.1%20(64-bit)

I’d suggest you download a couple of versions for any future re-installation, just in case Canon would decide to take down those download options in the near future.

I hope that helps you a bit,
      DO

There are reports of printer problems in the latest patches.

Can you remove recent patches one by one?
Do you have an image backup you can restore?

      cheers, Paul

Edit: sorry, I posted the wrong link, my bad.

FYI the above link (reports of printer problems in the latest patches) gives me a big warning that the site may have or has been hacked (running the latest Opera in Linux Mint 19.2)

Did you try to reset and clear the print spooler?

A few months back I finally stopped trying to perform Herculean gymnastics to make an HP 4630 printer work with Windows 10. Bought it from Walmart on sale and I loved that it worked without complaint. Until I migrated from Windows 7 to 10. I had the HP printer for at least five years. Maybe more. It was well beyond its support horizon (although like it seems you do) I like to drive my gear into the ground before I replace it.

I replaced the HP printer with an Epson printer I got on sale at my favorite office supply store, Staples ($129 vs. $189). And the Epson printer’s software works very well with Windows 10. This stopped all my printer driver gymnastics. I’m not advocating one printer manufacturer’s gear over the other.

My experience with ‘older’ printers and Windows 7 or 8 or Windows 10? If the printer is more than a few years old, its drivers (and hardware) have long gone out of date and are no longer supported. When using an old printer like yours with Windows 10 nothing about that combination will want to play nice.

      I ordered a new printer – Canon TR8520, $100 + tax

I bought my ip6700D with a few extra cartridges at a garage sale for $20. I don’t understand why drivers are too complicated for the manufacturer to routinely update them from a new OS, but that’s life.

My distress in over trashing the old printer. I’ve volunteered at Household Recycling Goods for 12 years. I will list it on Craig’s List for free for someone not running Win 10.

      Thanks for your responses.

      @ Hobkirk

Looks like you have gone in a new direction of getting a *new* printer.

Another option that may have helped is a third party printer driver, PrintFab.  Supposed to be supported on Win7 thru Win10 (WinXP by request).

There’s a 30 day free trial to determine if it will work on your system and with your printer.

Family plan allows for up to 3 computers, and is cross platform licensed with Linux, MAC, and Windows.

Here’s the details for your Canon ip6700D Printer .

Don’t know if your printer includes a *scanner function*, but the website says *(multifunction devices: only printer unit is supported, not scanner unit)*.

Vuescan would probably let you operate your scanner in Windows 10.
        https://www.hamrick.com/

It’s not free – it costs between $60 and $100 to activate the software. Or you can use the trial edition forever, if you don’t mind having a watermark on your scanned images. The trial edition will let you know if Vuescan will work with your scanner.

It took me a very long time to finally get my Canon scanner working with Linux Mint. (Many others had the same experience, according to the comments I was reading.) Early in that process, Vuescan got the scanner working right out of the box. But I didn’t want to pay the activation fee, so I kept looking for a free solution. I finally got it working; but I could have stopped looking if I had gone with Vuescan.

I was very impressed with Vuescan, that it was solidly designed software.

better in the long run if the OP gets a new printer, even if its a newer Canon printer that has official Win10 drivers.

I had a feeling that a recent Win10 update or a new Win10 feature update may break support for older printers, especially the canon ip6700d, which that specific printer is a 2006-era model.
