    Morning –

Tried to get my (old) printer –non plug & play – to work with my new computer (win98, SE). I see the printer icon in lower right-corner flash with page number information, but nothing prints out. The printer does not flash its buffer lights so it is not receiving the data. The printer is set as default, the cables are securely in place.

    (Tried printing from Wordpad/Notepad. Nothing.)

    I have received message

      What port are you using?
If the parallel port, the setting should be LPT1

What make and model of printer?
Have you installed the correct printer driver for it?

Can you double click the system-tray printer icon when it flashes and get it to open?
If you can, you should see any documents being printed spooled in there.

Afternoon, Leif. Thanks for your quick response.

        I’m using LPT1.
The make/model of printer is IBM (laser), 4019

        Yes, the driver is correct.
The printer icon flashes so quickly that it’s physically impossible to open it.

What’s frustrating is that all SEEMS to be well, except nothing goes to the buffer. Does this indicate a software/hardware problem, or is it impossible to tell?

        Again, my thanks!

          I hope you said you’re using Win98…

Shutdown to a DOS (or Command) Prompt. When at the prompt, type:

          C:>dir C: >lpt1:

This will let you know if you’re got a good connection to the printer. The output on the printer should be a directory listing of the root of the C: Drive.

If this doesn’t work, I suggest checking your parallel port settings in the BIOS. Trying switching between EPP / ECP / etc…

Have you tried using a different cable?
