Printing to a network printer or Nitro PDF driver doesn’t work after Win10 upgrade

I upgraded my system on the first day and most everything seemed to go fine except for printing to my networked HP laser printer or a PDF printer driver from Nitro. When I try to use these devices, the source program goes into “Not responding” mode and just sits there. I can print to the Windows fax driver and the XPS document writer.

How do I clean up the printing function?

Since Nitro PDF is a print driver perhaps it needs an update. Its website says nothing about being Windows 10 compatible. You should contact the Nitro developers.

Try reinstalling the printer. Note: HP is notorious for not providing driver updates for new Windows versions. What model printer is it?

I ran into the same problem with Nitro PDF Creator. It locks up the print queues and even a restart doesn’t clear them.

The solution I found was to use System Restore, but, for reasons unknown, I don’t believe this is activated by default in Windows 10. So you may not have any restore points you can use.

I didn’t try this but if you google something about “purge print queues” you will find some ways to get rid of the offending print jobs by temporarily stopping the spooler service, deleting the jobs, and restarting the service. As I say, I didn’t try this, but it may work.

The suggestion above of contacting the developers is easier said than done, if you are using their free product! I eventually found an email address from another post on this forum, and I sent an email directly yesterday. However, the post with the address was from 2013, and I don’t know if its still good. In any event, I haven’t had a reply yet!

My advice would be to uninstall Nitro Reader 3 at least for the time being, and use the built-in Microsoft Print to PDF function that is embedded in Windows 10. You can use Edge as your pdf reader in the meantime. Hopefully, the developers will fix the problem soon and we can all return to the free PDF Reader/Creator we love so much!

BTW, one other thing occurred to me. In my experience, Nitro PDF Creator locked out ALL printer drivers, and I cold not print to any printer at all until I did the system restore. It occurs to me that maybe that was the same situation with your HP printer. Maybe, if you uninstall Nitro (or at least clear the print spooler), that your HP printer may work again. Just a thought!

I had to reinstall my HP Officejet after win 10. It would print but I couldn’t access any of the features. When I clicked on the printer a window came up to install it, which I did and everything works fine on it now.

Thank you all for your help. So far, my problem is “half” solved. JoeP517 and GreyBat, I’m avoiding the Nitro driver for now and using the MS option. I’ll be searching out a fix because there are some things the Nitro driver does that I like and miss in the MS driver.

My physical printer is a HP Color LaserJet 2600n. On that front, I:
1. Deleted both drivers from Devices and Printers
2. Ran HP uninstall
3. Ran regedit and deleted all the references I could find to my printer
4. Reran the printer installation

That seems to have done the trick, as I’ve been able to use the software that otherwise was running off into Never Never Land.

I had the same problem with Nitro and it was crashing my print queue and hanging the system after upgrading to win 10. I managed to contact someone at Nitro. The have discontinued the free reader and are only supporting the Nitro 10 Pro enterprise version. So it will never work under Win 10. That is a shame I used it as my primary reader. I suppose they weren’t making any money off of it so they decided to stop developing.

Here is the email conversation I had with them;

“Unfortunately, Nitro Reader is not compatible with Windows 10. You have to keep in mind that Nitro Reader was released way before Windows 10 was and we had no way of knowing what changes Microsoft will make in their latest Operating System. Our engineers are currently working hard on ensuring that our latest build of Nitro Pro 10 is functional and compatible with Windows 10. We have no plans of fixing previous versions as of now but that could change as well. Please check our website periodically for updates.”

“So do I understand correctly that the free pdf reader is a discontinued product?”
“You are correct, we’re phasing it out. We will only support our enterprise customers with Reader from now on. I’m assuming you’re not part of an enterprise account with us, correct? ”

Goodbye Nitro reader. I sure liked you while you were here but it is back to Adobe. But Win10 has a build in PDF printer. So all is not lost but it doesn’t work as smooth as the Nitro printer did.

If you can’t find drivers for the Epson just try it anyway. I’ve been running an old Epson Stylus Photo 890 since last October on various Win10 builds. It runs just fine. I don’t have any of the Epson extra junk which is OK.

I just installed PrimoPDF v5.1.0.2 (March 17, 2011) on Win10 Pro build 10525 and it works fine (PrimoPDF is another Nitro product). The installer also installed MS DotNet Framework 3.5.

PrimoPDF is a print driver only, so I don’t know if it will do what you want.

I downloaded Adobe and found I still hate it as much as I did before Nitro and also don’t like their subscription business model. I searched around and found Foxit

Anyone that was using Nitro might be impressed, I am and it is free. In fact it is better than Nitro and it is working fine on Win 10.
