This is one of two possibly linked threads – just in case they are related. The other is “Networked printer has gone invisible”.

We have a small XP SP3 home network with one printer (HP2600N) on the net and the other (HP1018) on pc#1 via USB. Both run fine from pc#1. pc#2 has been run through the add printer wizard and now offers both printers via pc#1.

Depending on what order the pcs’ have booted, sometime printing from pc#2 simply fails – no messages of any kind and nothing in the printer window. This is fixable, If I go into windows explorer on pc#2 and into the network and select pc#1 I get asked for a password and user name (which is reasonable). Once I supply these, and get network access, printing from pc#2 works – until the next shut down / boot cycle.

What I would like is to be able to build in the password / user name for pc#1 into pc#2’s print access process, or failing that, to have the print process request the password / user name when print requests are made.

You have NOT stated what OS’s are on the PC1 and 2?

Line 2 says “XP SP3” – what else is there to say?

Easiest way to get things going is to have the same account on each pc (same user name and password), even if only to share the printers. Everything will happen transparently, no further worries.

Works for me – thanks very much! 🙂

(I still think it is poor design if this is the only way, but I am happy to settle for what does work!)

      You’re welcome.
I agree that it could be improved upon a bit. One thing that annoys me is that no matter if you tell windows to save username and password, when connecting from another computer under a different account, because that login data won’t be used in a new attempt to connect. This happens even in Windows 7.
