Prioritising access to main storage devices

Is there a way for the user to manipulate a program’s priority of access to storage? Most indexer programs seem well-behaved in this regard, but other programs seem to hog access when I’d like them to step into the background because I’m in a hurry for results from another program. What’s my Computer Doing illustrates these conflicts but I want to do something to resolve them.

I don’t think that you can prioritise data access specifically, but storage transfers are executed via the CPU so setting the program’s priority level in Task Manager will, albeit indirectly, achieve the same thing.

In the Task Manager Processes tab right click on the process whose priority you want to change and go from there.

If you don’t know the process name, go to the Applications tab, right click on the application you want and click on Go to process.
