I changed the battery on my Dell XPS 13 9350 & have had a strange problem since. While on AC power I get the message that the battery is nearly flat & I need to plug it in to AC power. Looking at the battery level indicator it is showing empty but looking at it again after a little while it is showing full charge. This can happen several times a day. The battery level indicator shows full charge whenever you look at it until the message appears. The laptop will run fine on battery, I put it through the charge / discharge cycle several times when I 1st installed it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do the charge status LEDs on the unit (assuming it has them!) match the status reported in the operating system?

If so, it sounds like the battery is defective, or that the connection to the battery (often a ribbon cable on modern laptops with non-removable batteries) is damaged.  Was it an OEM Dell battery or aftermarket?

How long does the laptop run on battery?
Do you get sudden low battery messages when running on battery?
Maybe the charging circuit is unhappy and giving intermittent readings.

      cheers, Paul

You got your answer. Battery not compatible.

I have not timed it as I normally run on A/C but when I went through the charge/discharge cycle it was about 4 hours. When running on battery I have not seen sudden low battery messages, only on A/C. When it 1st happened the laptop was suddenly going into hibernate mode without warning.

The battery was bought via Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07RBK51YW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Do some more tests on battery to see if it’s consistent.

I have taken some timings between errors. The 1st happened after about 11 hours, the next was 10 minutes, the next 17 hours and it has currently been 5.5 hours. There have been times that it was more frequent. I unplugged the A/C power when I got an error & the battery monitor showed it running on battery at 100%.

Looks like you’ll have to keep an eye on it for a week or two. 🙁

I have found a CMD which gives a battery report

      powercfg /batteryreport

The output is a HTML which cant be attached so I have converted it to a word document. Hope this will give someone a clue

      Thanks

It’s possible for the battery to work as far as keeping the laptop working without A/C power, but for the bit that reports the battery state to the laptop to not function properly.  That seems to be what is happening when it’s on AC power.

I followed the link you provided, and it says the battery has a 1 year warranty.  I’d drop the seller a line (I would use the Amazon “question for seller/ warranty question” link if they haven’t provided another method) to describe the issue and request a replacement.  The seller may not even want the original bettery back… that’s been the trend with a lot of the warranty returns I’ve done in the past few years.  If the old item is really defective, they often don’t want it back.  That may save you the trouble from disassembling the laptop twice and having to mail it to them.

Obvious question:  Dell-branded battery or 3rd party?   The latter are plain awful for the most part.

      • #2253204

Get the Dell branded battery. It will be good quality. You don’t know what you will be getting if you get an off-brand.

If I couldn’t find a Dell branded battery, I would go with a known brand, such as Duracell.

Did you check the reviews – seems the Dell Bios does not like it and refuses to co-operate on some folks machines!

        cheers, Paul
