When I go to Update and security I am told “There’s a problem with getting preview builds. Your preview build settings need attention. Go to Advanced options to fix this issue.” Advanced options says “Your security settings need attention to get Insider Preview builds. Fix this issue”

When I click “Fix this issue” I am told “Your security settings need attention. We need to change security settings on your device so that you can get Insider Preview builds. We’ll fix this issue straight away; after that you’ll need to restart your device”. I click Confirm and then restart but then get the same message.

How do I solve this problem?

jwoods, thanks, I tried that but it made no difference. Do you, or does anyone else, have any other ideas?

      • #1536708

        Hello Roy.

        >>> have any other ideas? << Update & Security -> Advance Options -> then re-initialized the Insider Preview and selected Fast. Bingo !

Try this and let us know. Mind you, you will still have to go and look for updates yourself and if you do get any, they will not show up in the listing. Such is life as MS has more or less closed up the Insider mode.

        All best wishes. Jean.

Just to make sure I understand — you’re saying that Insiders are no longer getting new builds via Windows Updates, right?

Been wondering about this, because I’ve been on build 10240 (Slow ring) since the end of July. I keep reading about people who are on newer builds, and yet they’re not showing up for me.

Insiders are still getting new builds via Windows updates. You haven’t been seeing them because you are on the slow ring. People getting the new builds are on the fast ring. I did read where build 10586 just got released to the slow ring so it should be available to you now.

Hello Jerry. How are you ?

Are you getting the same presentation as I in so far as the Defender updates are not shown in the list of installed updates ? Also, they do not install automatically, I have to go “Search for Updates” and then I am offered them. Am I too fast on the draw, should I just wait for them ? I think that in the last week or so, I got 5 Defender updates.

              42606-0Updates

I guess that we are not supposed to uninstall a Defender update at all ???

              All best wishes. Jean.

Jean, I’m seeing the same thing. I’ll have to keep an eye on this and also check to see if Defender is keeping up to date on its own rather than via Windows Update as in the past.

Jean, how do you re-initialise the Insider Preview? Please clarify that for me.

      Thanks, Roy

      • #1536779

        Roy, just this way.

Settings -> Update & Security -> Advance Options -> then re-initialize the Insider Preview at the bottom of the screen.

Go to the Start icon, find Settings and follow the line as above. I do not say that you will be getting updates as before, no way, the Insider mode is gone, as far as I can tell. I get updates by forcing the machine to scan for them. The funny part is that even if I receive some updates, they do not show up in the “installed” list, I think that the Defender updates are not to be rolled back.

Version 10586 seems to be the one to use. All best wishes. Jean.

MS has more or less closed up the Insider mode.

the Insider mode is gone, as far as I can tell.

Could you explain what you mean by this?

          Especially in the light of:

          • #1536999

Hello Roy. ( not Bruce ).

Obviously, as we are many miles apart, I can not see your machine. Now, why you do to see the same screens as I see might be due to getting on the Insider late, a wild guess. As you could see, I did get on the Insider scheme, my PrnScrn shows this. What the benefit ( or none ) this offers, I ignore. It was mentioned in a Gab Ault message that maybe it was terminated, no further explanation. So we are left in a fog !

Granted, my PrnScrn is in contrast with my previous note, I was then, not aware that Insider could be re-initialized, I just poked around in W-10 and saw it and clicked it ON. What really I find is a brain rocker, is the reason so far known by MS alone, why some settings are negated when getting a new Preview. All my passwords are gone, specially to my bank account, some of my printers need to be redone, my LAN is the worst one, etc. It always amazes me why all these machines here behave differently, one and unique user. I can LAN from one to two that I have set up but not in reverse access, baffling !

All the above is my own experience and I quote them as I see them. Hey, we are all together on this, are we not ?

            All fine wishes. Jean.

I think you must have misunderstood something there.

              Hello Bruce.

I think you must have misunderstood something there.

No, I do not think so. There is a big MAYBE in my line and the Insider mode is quite changed from what we were used to. One had to re-assert his connection to the app and used the process that Jerry explained here. You might have missed that ! I did not and I can still enter comments to them via the Insider Hub app. My last comment was concerning my trusty Laserjet 6L HP printer that ran fine until this last update. HP says that the driver is included in W-8 OS and sure enough W-10 ran it until a week ago or so. I have removed and re-installed the driver umpteen times, no joy.

              Best wishes. Jean.

Jean, regarding your post #8 there is no reference to re-initialising the Insider Preview at the bottom of my screen. The last item there on my system refers to Privacy Options, so unless you or someone else has any other ideas it seems I’m stuck with Build 10576 until the iso download for the latest Build is available.

      Best wishes,
      Roy

      • #1536886

Roy, this is not a reply to your post but a run-around to get the .iso.

        Getintopc.com has them all. C&P this addy : http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/

The third one is 64 bitness. Have fun.

Edit Roy. After you click on Advanced Options, you should see this :

        42608-0Stop

Make sure that you select the proper line so you get back to Insiders.

        All best wishes. Jean.

Jean, my laptop show no Defender updates in Windows Update History but the Update tab in Windows Defender shows a definition Update dated today. That leads me to believe that Windows Defender updates itself without relying on Windows Update.

        Jerry, thanks for the head-up.

I never thought about looking at the Defender dialogue itself to see if there were updates. One more item to watch, for the fun of it.

Edit: Yesterday, I went looking and did find some very recent update action. Thanks, Jerry.

        All sincere best wishes. Jean.

Jean, regarding your post #12 the line regarding choosing your insider level does not appear on my system.

I downloaded the ISO file for Win 10 Pro 64 bit Build 10586 from the link you gave me and it installed OK except that when I go to Update & Security I still get the same message about my security settings, and clicking fix this and confirming and then restarting, which I did several times, makes no difference.

      HELP!!

      • #1537002

Hello Roy, how are you ?

Search my mind why you do not see the same screens as I do. I see them all on my many machines here, 7 of them.

Hourra on the .iso D/L. Keep that URL of getintopc.com handy.

Did you recently try to get on the Insider bandwagon ? If so, you might be kept out by MS ? I have been on, as many here, from day-1.

Some better advised users here might be able to tell you where to click to get this going, I am too far away from your screen.

        All best wishes. Jean.

    • #1537250

Bruce, I believe Jean was referring to the Insider Hub not the Insider program. This comment was given when Build 10586 was released.

The Insider Hub might be gone after upgrading to this build. You can get Insider Hub back by going to Settings > System > Apps & features and clicking “Mange optional features”, choosing “Add a feature” and selecting Insider Hub

      .

This was only true for some users. It was still there for me.

      Jerry

      • #1537263

Jerry, yes, semantics got me again !

The Insider is still available as before, methinks, going to the Hub and then clicking on “Rate your build” seems to offer the same, in my eye, presentation. Let me know if you find it different.

Mine is still there for me too. All best wishes. Jean.
