In the past I have installed different versions of Linux both side by side with Windows, and replacing Windows. I was curious about a new distro called Windowsfx, and, using Rufus, created a USB bootable drive with the ISO file required:

    windowsfx-11.3.1-plasma-win11-powertoys-13.1.iso

With a Windows 11 test machine, I attempted the usual approach, going to Advanced Startup Options, and selecting the bootable USB drive for the restart. All I would get during restart is a blue screen, followed by a request for  bitlocker code. After about 3 tries, I gave up. It would not boot off of the stick. Could this be some sort of Windows 11 security thing? I never had this type of problem with Windows 10.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Lloyd

The lack of boot is probably due to secure boot. You either need to turn it off or add the Linux boot certificate.
To test it, create a Windows boot USB and try to boot that.

If you have Bitlocker on the disk you may not be able to install Linux. I would make a bakcup and then decrypt the disk before install.

      cheers, Paul

I followed instructions for Lubuntu installation using Rufus as presented in the above article by Randy McElveen. The installation went smoothly and without error.

It looks like WindowsFX (how they can call it that, I do not know) is a derivative of Neon, which I use personally, and as a Ubuntu derivative itself, it works with Secure Boot out of the box… but that’s once it is installed. You will probably have to turn Secure Boot off to be able to boot from the USB install drive, as it was probably not set up with Secure Boot support.

With Windows 11’s requirement for Secure Boot, it will probably have to be turned on again to boot Windows.

As for Bitlocker… I have never used that, so I can’t offer any specific steps, but I’d suggest the same thing Paul T mentioned, back up and decrypt it prior to the Linux installation. You presumably would then be able to re-encrypt the Windows volume(s). You could also choose to encrypt the new Linux setup when you install it if you wanted to.

bit late to this but, I’ll bet it’s secure boot related 🙂

You may want to watch this video before continuing any further with the distro.

Windowsfx is also known as Linuxfx. Each website URL below use the same IP address, the only difference between the two are the name and icon used.
